I was in the same predicament you were in a week ago. Had my 5k maintenance light on. Procrastinated on bringing truck in. When I saw the tsb to reflash the ecu. I brought it in for the 5k maintenance as well as the tsb. Had the oil changed as well.

    Doooo eeeeit

I'm not sure why you don't believe Blackstone. They tested your oil and said it was good as far as the tests went. Depending on the conditions your bike is stored, that really might be true. I've got turbines with 10+years on oil. It's not exactly the same, but if your bike isn't absorbing moisture, it might be stable.

So, if you lied to them about the sample and the sample tested good because it hasn't degraded due to the conditions it's in..... what are they supposed to think?

I think the biggest thing to worry about with old oil is how much water the oil absorbed from the atmosphere. If your engine is sealed pretty well and stored in an environment that doesn't promote moisture getting in the oil..... it'll last a bit.

Anyway, OP, 10K is just fine. Follow the manual. I've some Blackstone Tests in my signature if you believe them.

I admit I should not have said I do not believe Blackstone . The reason for the test I did , was more to find out for myself if the oil companies saying their oil is only good for a year was true , or to sell more oil . I fully agree with you on the moisture and storage conditions , I have had cars that have only been driven 500 or so miles a year and always stored inside . I had no problem leaving oil in them for up to 3 years , with no ill effects .
As far as Blackstone goes , I seems it would be a great service for fleet owners or for monitoring expensive equipment for wear . This would be especially important for things such as hospital backup generators and single engine airplanes for obvious reasons . It would be great for city bus fleets and semi tractors which hold a lot of oil , and drive a lot of miles .
The cost of the test is too close to the cost of just changing the oil to bother with for me for our two vehicles . Our SUV is driven about 10K per year and I change the oil twice per year . The Tacoma is driven about 5K per year and will change it once per year. Oh , and I may not need to change the oil in my motorcycle for another 7 years lol.

A main incentive for the auto manufacturers to increase their maintenance intervals maybe to have a lower initial cost of maintenance number on the first year of ownership as it relates to its competitors. It's NOT that I don’t trust them. :D
Then there is the matter of saving on the number of of oil changes during the “free” maintenance period some manufacturers like TOYOTA offer.

But there may also be a more practical little mention reason. This maybe the wear and tear on an engine at startup, when the oil and filter is changed. Most engines are started with elevated friction because of a dry oil filter element, thus the oil is bypassed during those few seconds at startup, which can be of a higher than normal wear concern.

That said, I change mine every 5k because I can, it’s easy for me, and because I’m already down there checking everything underneath. I also pre-fill the oil filter canister to avoid a dry high friction startup.

Doing it at 10k ought not get you into any trouble, and may make a better choice for some.
But as for me, I choose to take the road less traveled, and because I like the way my engine purrs with every fresh oil change.

    Cheers!

Australia Toyota allows anything from 5W-30 to 20W-50 in the 2GR-FKS V6.

The reason I get my oil tested isn't to tell me how often to change my oil, it's to develop a trend on engine wear. Kinda gives me a heads up when I should pull the engine in the next 250,00-350,000 miles.

Spoke to an engineer who supported development of the D4-S engine for Toyota.

Based on feedback, a 5k interval is acceptable during engine break in time. This essentially covers the first 10-15k miles where there may be an initial accumulation of elemental impurities in the oil. This has been confirmed with Toyota's in-house lab testing. After this period there is only psychological benefit to performing oil changes below 10K mile intervals, especially when using modern synthetic oils.

For his personal 3rd Gen TRD OR he sticks to a 7,500-12,500 mile interval (as life allows) and has gone as long as 17k miles between oil changes without any issues.

I tend to stick with a similar philosophy with my TRD OR.

I feel more often is better than too long. IMO 10K is not a one size fits all deal. If you put a fair amount of miles on your tuck, especially with a lot of highway driving in a fairly clean environment, 10k is fine. Me.... I put 5,000 - 7000 miles a year on my truck, mostly in-town driving with a lot idling at traffic lights and train crossings with a fair amount of road construction kicking up dust. 5000 puts me at once a year and I can't help feel like that's pushing the envelope. No way I could go 2 years. I've settle on 8-9 months no matter the miles even if I have to pay for it myself.

there has been multiple people having UOAs done on their Tacomas oil at 10k OCIs as called for by Toyota corp. and all results say that running the oil for that period of time is 100% fine, what more proof is necessary to convince neurotics that they don't have to change the oil at less than the 10k OCI

There is nothing you can do except sit back and enjoy the show. I think I need to buy some stock in Mobil 1 and Rotella, what other oil companies seem to be the top picks for the 5k guys?

The requirement is every 10k, which means you can go longer without problem but not every engine is equal. That being said I do every 5k.
