With my 2nd gen Taco I was spoiled by where the oil filter was located and how easy it was to change my own oil but now with the 3rd gen I think I’ll still change my own oil (every 5k miles) but now it looks like I will need some special tools. Are there kits available which have the newer oil filter wrench and connector to drain the oil from the filter housing? Also would appreciate tips on doing it the easiest way possible.

Motivx filter tool for the tacoma is great.
Some may say you should also get the fumoto valve for the oil pan drain plug. I offroad a bunch and elect to keep the drain plug.

The filter drain plastic piece that comes with the filter kits is a pain. I have put plastic tubing on the end of it to help but it is what it is.

Wouldn’t hurt either to pick up the metal filter can for about $25-30. It’s the same one as you’ll find on most Lexus with the 2GR and directly replaces the plastic one that’s stock on the 3rd gen.

As long as you torque the plastic one as you’re supposed to, it in theory should be fine but $30 for my piece of mind and eliminating a plastic part is worth it in my opinion.

    Part is 15620-31060

But definitely agree with the MotiveX wrench if anything, its built very well, fits perfect, way easier to turn using a 24mm socket on the bolt head, and made in USA.

Agree with above recommendations for the MotivX kit. I find the wrench/tool fit is just a little off but the drain tool alone is worth the cost of the kit. And I like the screw-on funnel.
