Haven't had a chance to try it yet - just remembering my Mazda3 had a drain plug but only a little oil came out, removing the housing then the rest came out in a big mess.

And identical to 07 Lexus ES350, which has an aluminum version. Same replacement part# on Amazon.
I have found there is one of two drain tube styles that are included in all the filters I have purchased for this design: a push-in and a screw-in. The screw-in is easier to use and less messier. Fram Ultra and Purolator synthetic have them. I know Toyota, K&N, Wix XL, Mobil1, and, I think, Hastings, did not. Yes, I've tried them all - I'm a filter slut. However, I may be sticking with Fram Ultra from here on as it's made in USA and is well regarded.

Whatever the original intention of switching cartridge style over external filter, the formal is better for the environment, if you don't spill oil! It produces less waste. Even though every filter comes with O-rings, they can easily last multiple oil changes.

On the taco, I think I prefer the location of the filter. Even though I'm 6'1", with a 2.5" lift and the huge bumper/grille on the '16, much of the engine bay is quite a reach.

It may be more efficient but there's probably no difference in the way it filters the oil. I never heard of a dealer selling anything at cost so I sure hope my dealer does also, 4 bucks is a great price. One thing I'm confused about, the Toyota filter is an OEM.

Sounds like you really like to play it safe. I've had a terrible time with steel bolts because they salt the roads here but Never-seize fixed that problem. Stainless steel plus Never-seize is a real guarantee.

Makes you wish they all did what Subaru did, put the filter up top, upside down, easy peasy to get to, doesn't spill a drop, especially nice if the vehicle has a skid plate.

This is just like the 2009 Rav4. This is a messy solution to changing oil. It also is cumbersome if the small cap with the ratchet slot comes off first then you need filter wrench to get the remaining parts off you also need to be careful when cleaning the filter holder that the center piece doesn't pop out and then you got to put it back together. I guess I will keep my 2008 until it dies oil change takes less than 20 minuets to complete.

Thanks to tips on here, the oc yesterday was easy with only a few oil drips (but put down a piece of carboard first). Was much less mess than the '04 Escape with dpin on canister. I like the trick of using glass bottle (in my case a wine) to push drain nozzle into oil filter to drain it.

Yes, they are cheaper to manufacture, they charge more for them retail, and mechanics charge more to change them because of the DIY nature of the assembly. It's win/win. The only one being hurt is the is the consumer. Corporate loves it.

It's good to see my aluminum cap picture still making the rounds years later. Toyota also used these filters during the 60's in the Stout and Corona R Series Engines. The filters w/o metal in them are FAR cheaper and cleaner to recycle.... Once the extra steps are figured out, it's not terribly difficult.

I could not get the drain plug on the filter housing out for nothing, so I just removed the entire housing. I was all up in there too and splash, lol. I made a huge mess. Oh well. Hopefully when I take it in they will do it the right way and get that plug lose.

I was also surprised how small the oil pan is/looks. I was like, that can't be it can it? In the end I got online a looked a couple times just to make sure :)
