See anything out of place? It looks like one of the 3 prong things was a little short....

They're supposed to push in, drain the oil and remove the o-ring from what I've read. I think the threaded one will be just fine.

$3 plastic container. Cut out the bottom. Zero splatters. Problem solved. Clean it out and use it next time.

As memory serves until the mid 60's all GM products( cars and light trucks) came with this type of filtration system then every thing went to a spin-on type for a "faster more efficient " oil change.
Chevrolet kept it on the Corvette and trucks saying it gave more capacity and efficiency, there was even a long version for trucks, that the race guys used because it gave a much higher oil capacity and better filtration, they were / are messy, and you had to fill them with clean oil before tightening, to avoid Dry starts. No where did I ever read that the Spin-ons were in anyway better. I love my old vette
so it is a labor of love to change the old style filter. I do not have such romantic ideals about my 2016 TRD sport with 3.5 L engine, this is a disappointment, I only have 2300 miles on it. Maybe I can sell it before the first oil change is due, and pass this trouble maker on to someone else. Come on Toyota what the hell were you thinking, Plastic.......Really

While we are buying things from Amazon...I already got a case of the filter elements for $37.50 for ten. They come with the gaskets etc. but you still need to get the drain plug gasket. These say they are for a Scion but the part number is correct. They came from a Toyota dealer and had the holographic label and all. I love Amazon Prime.

These push-in drain tubes are a PIA. You may prefer the threaded style.
These, among others, have threads: Bosch, Beck-Arnley, Mann, Purolator.

I saved the first one I saw and now use it with Wix XP filters, which carry the push-in type.

My 75 Triumph TR6 has the same but I use an adapter for a canister,it's old teck. I think they did it so we'll pay them to change our oil, you won't get that filter at Wallmart.

Get used to these type of filters. Many maufactures have already gone to these. Spin on is becoming a thing of the past. The reason is EPA requirement for business to crush used fiters to squeeze out all the oil before disposal. These are much easier to crush and less to dispose of. I don't like them either, but they are hear to stay.

Totally agree, Honda tried that crap with my brother on his Goldwing. He then showed them in writing that they were wrong. Service manager dropped his head and walked away, oh and out the door because the owner was standing there at the time and got fired for it.

@robupstateny check the date of the post you replied to... :D

Yes, Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits tie-in sales, so they can't require you to buy branded materials or pay for maintenance at specific places.

Still, there's an exception in the law for "service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty" -- i.e. they can require you to use certain places / parts if there's not a charge to the consumer. (15 U.S. Code § 2302 section (c) )

One could possibly interpret that exception to apply to the free maintenance provided for the first 2yr / 24k miles. I'd be surprised if corporate were to push back on that provided the owner could prove that they'd properly performed the required maintenance in lieu of the dealer performing it.

What difference does a post date have to do with me making a comment? I realize I'm a newbie here, please advise.

Can you purchase just the threaded drain tube somewhere? I already bought a box of Toyota oil filters off Ebay and they all are the push in type.
