I mean is this type of filter common across other brands? I've never had a vehicle that didn't use the traditional filter.

No need to be a dick. I've never owned a vehicle that didn't use a traditional filter, so I was curious.

The 4Runner I had was the first I'd seen of it. I've come to learn that this configuration is common with other manufacturers and on a few other Toyotas (Sienna to think of one).

I have never seen this either. Maybe due to the fact that I have always owned a Tacoma/Toyota pick up of some kind.
I guess there are three of us under said rock. o_O

Yes. Off the top of my head I can think of the Cheavy 3.6L (used across some 12 GM models including the Colorado) and the Ford Mustang, though in many cases they are accessed from the top (cap is right next to dipstick handle):

Thanks for the info. Would you have the part number for the aluminum filter housing? It looks like a Toyota part.

I think they should have left wellenough alone. I remember changing these out in the 60s they were a mess then.

I would imagine because of the lack of metal.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
That's a damn shame that Toyota could not have done this exact modification on the oil filter cartridge as other manufacturers have done, would have made Oil changes a bit easier. But leave it up to Toyota to fuck up a good thing, right.

Toyota OEM #15620-31060. Amazon has it for $27.

You may have to do a slight mod if the tube is not the same length, explained and here.

This is same setup as our 2015 RAV4. Looks like Toyota is returning to the sixties...any old-timers remember the cannister filters on the 283 chevy? It was a big deal when the "spin on" filter "AC PF2" came about.
Need to check...aluminum cannister for our RAV? Like the "old fashioned" spin on on my Tacoma!
