Just did oil & filter change on my.. 2018..Tacoma

    I'm sorri...I gotta.ask
Any idea who took the stupid pill & re-invented the OIL filter housing & process ?
Seriously, from pulling the skid pan off,pre-drain plug, safety lock tab, cheap plastic housing, silly special wrench..2 throw away rubber o rings & a paper cartridge with plastic on it...I don't see this as an improvement.

My 07 Tacoma filter was on top of the engine, exposed, with like 8 min time for complete job..no mess

This ~18, paper cartridge drips oil badly, for recycling. All other filters, slide in box upside down & no mess. Plus task easly removed off & on.
Very frustrated & disappointed with my new Toyota & their engineers :(

Not much you can do. The plastic housing can be replaced with a metal one. You could also get the TRD skid which has access panels so you don't have to remove the whole thing. Other than that just pay someone else to do it.

Even with skids that have access panels, you’re still going to have a mess.

There was a guy in here in the third gen marketplace making filter housings with a fumoto valve built in so you could drain from that location before changing. If you wanna spend the cash, that could be a mess free route for you.

On the flip side, its not like you're changing the oil filter every day. You change the thing what, maybe once or twice a year? Not a big deal

Supposedly they went to this design for less waste.

Ya them are sweet ideas, thx.

I'm thinkin tryin write letter to Toyota Head office.

Hoping soon, a smarter dude will invent a remote oil filter adapter & hoses, with reg- spin on cartridge. Surely other Yota owners would enjoy a new upgrade with user friendly options.

First time changing cartridge style a few weeks ago, I bought a socket adapter in advance, I didn't have any issues or complaints. Next time I will use the filter drain longer, as I didn't drain all the way.

Switch to a spin on or remote filter with Baxter. It's a little pricey but well worth it imo.

I really don't understand why this is a common post around here.. What's the big deal?

It's not just toyota with cartridge filters.

If you had a 2nd Gen, you'd understand why.

They didn't have to re-invent it; the just had to re-visit it.
Spin on oil filters weren't a thing until the 50s.

I believe most if not all new cars are utilizing cartridge filters now and moving forward. It's going green, government regulations, etc...

Or else they went this way to stop do it yourselfers from doing their own services so that way they can gouge you for more money when your truck gets serviced as rotating tires, brake inspections, shocks, wiper blades, air filters etc.. The new filter is just the paper element without a metal cannister but why is it more money. GM and others had the cartridge system prior to 1970 and it was a pain in ass then as it is now always having leak points with misplaced or damaged gaskets. I guess this is the new technology that everyone wants - not me.

I do agree with you here. Clearly squeezing out higher margins played a part in this decision. I don't like that Toyota is charging more for less product... that's jacked up. But in terms of convincing more people to take their trucks in for service, I'm not so sure... it's not that hard to change out the new filter. If you're a DIYer, chances are you will suck it up and spend the extra 5-10 min it takes to change out the new style one. You get used to it pretty quickly.

Loved the 2nd gen oil change set up, filter on top already upside down. Quick and easy. Not a fan of cartridge filters at all.

I put a Fumoto valve on the oil pan and use the tool pictured below to drain the filter housing. I thought it makes for an easy oil change.

No need to change the filter, the dealership doesn’t.

Here's a good write up by @Dacon. Maybe he'll chime in about his experience with a Baxter adapter.
