I have been doing a lot of research on filters lately. Some of the best constructed filters are Purlator and Pure 1, Mobile 1, Bosh. I used Fram for years but lately they are now one of the worse made filters. Fram recently changed their supplier. There are only a few companies that make their own filter, purlator for one, most of the companies "farm out" to other companies to cut costs (and quality). I have used a lot Toyota filters also, decent quality, but some of their filters are made in Thailand. I personalty have never heard of a filter "failing" Unless you are a heavy off driver etc. any good filter will do the job for you. Google up oil filters and you will find a lot of links to sites that evuate them.

You've got a bit of dated information.

Fram has been making cheap cardboard filters for many, many years.
The "recent change" you may have read about was then Allied Signal bought them some time prior to 2006.

    Purolator is no longer "Purolator"
They were bought by Bosch a few years ago... However, Bosch maintained the filter production line. Bosch filters used to be Champion Labs (as are Mobil-1 and K&N). Bosch bought Purolator about the same time Champion switched to the "E-Core" construction... this is essentially a Fram-like filter using synthetic fiber instead of cardboard.
These Champion filters include STP, Wal-Mart's Supertech, and AC-Delco.

Bosch filters are now made on the Purolator production line and are essentially identical to the Purolator Premium Plus.

Mobil-1 and K&N are identical, and remain Champion Labs products, but they are still premium filters and were not changed when Champion went to the E-Core.
Sadly, they are also premium-priced... neither the Mobil-1 nor K&N are worth twice the price of the Purolator Pure-One.
