See, this is acceptable for me. I don't care if someone wants to spend money more often if it makes them feel good. As long as people understand that unless you fall under severe service conditions, changing your oil at 5k is done only to make you "feel" better. Too many people don't understand that.

I'll go ahead and say it, while potentially sticking my foot in my mouth. Looking @Woodrow F Call 's UOAs, there are plenty of additive components left (esp zinc that everyone seems to freak out about these days) and the viscosity is well within range at the time of the change. For myself, I can see that even certain severe conditions would not have me thinking about early changes.

Yeah..... after the drivetrain warranty is up, I'm probably just going to change at 10K even under "harsh" driving conditions unless testing shows that I need to change more often.

The first couple of tests even said to try 12K miles between. I probably won't stretch out the oil changes only because of the convenience of changing at 10K intervals. I don't want to think about 72K, 84k, 96k etc changes. Even numbers of 10 is just simpler.

Sounds to me like she's making pretty good decisions. Everything I've read is that short trips wear oil and other things much faster and oil changes are not too expensive. If it makes her feel good and it's not too expensive for her I don't think it's a big deal.

As for me, unless I'm driving it really hard I just stick to what it says in the little book in my glove box.

I hear you. Our Forester with 7,500mi intervals just cramps my dyslexic brain. 10k is a nice number. I do my own changes unless it is free at shop, but I hate when the shops put the actual mileage on those cling stickers before I immediately toss them in the round file.

The big thing is all of the water that the oil absorbs through moisture in the air. That increases your total acid number (TAN) and isn't good for the oil. A good 20-30 minute drive once a week is probably good to cook out the moisture in the oil.

I'm sure it'll double the number of miles I could put on it. :D

It wasn't me, but I generally agree. I wouldn't use Quaker State though. I've got turbines with 16 years on oil.... got a little different thing going on with their oil program though.

IMO, do what the manual says, don't beat on it, pay attention to it, and you should get long service out of it. I'm really liking this Blackstone stuff though, it'll give me a heads up when I get a problem..... maybe I can get ahead of it before it becomes a bigger problem.

So...changing my oil at 5-7k miles is kinda pointless?

As soon as my free service is up i'm switching to M1 and following a longer change schedule.
I did this with my 05 Altima - M1 oil every 14K miles and drove it to 178K with no issues other than wear and tear and gave it to my dad. He drove it to 207K following the same oil change schedule and then sold it to a friend. Last I heard, it was at 218K and drove from Cali to Kentucky when he moved.
part or majority of it has to do with the bulletproof QR25DE engine

AFAIK, it's never been lifetime; it was 100,000.
Toyota revised to 60,000 about 10 years ago.
Recommendations are for normal operating conditions.

Very interesting thread, thank you. As a potential buyer of a Tacoma TRD model (V6 obviously) and being too lazy to look, can someone tell me if the dash has an OLM and how many quarts it takes ? 10k intervals is a nice range, that would be once yearly for me. I am kinda a 5k person by habit but extending the interval would cut my cost in half. Saving money is a good thing!

Agreed, but I think Lifetime to Toyota is the 60k powertrain warrranty, that’s what they’re referring to. The lifetime of the warranty. After that it’s out of their hands.

I've owned a 2002 S10 with 251,000 miles, 1995 Caprice Wagon with 220,000 miles and several other cars with well over 100,000 miles.... most of those never had the AT fluid changed. Filter change and top off yes.

Engine oil gets contaminated and it is exposed to higher temps. An automatic transmission is sealed, doesn't get near as hot, and doesn't get contamination from blow by past the piston rings. That's probably why it's a little more forgiving and why there isn't a normal "change" schedule.

Hey guys, I worked with the Houston Police Department back in the 70's when Mobil 1 full synthetic was getting a foothold. All competitors poo poo'd full synthetic for decades after....but now! HPD test had 2 cars, Mobil 1 10w/30 (required back then). Never changed oil, just changed filter every 5k miles for 100k miles, maybe added a quart in all that time. Note: Factory spec. 2500 oil/filter change at the time for heavy use. Engine breakdown done, all components in both V8 crown vic engines met new engine spec at 100k miles. Now every oil manufacturer and auto manufacturer specs 100% synthetic. I still use 0-20 Mobil One. No I don't work for Mobil.
