at this point, its best to stay economical, to have a recession-proof vehicle. We will be hitting the second drop in the economy soon...real recovery is a few years off, maybe 5 or so...

I can appreciate anything with wheels and a motor. I had an XJ cherokee, great Jeep product, but IMHO Wranglers are for girls... at least there's enough cargo space for your purse...

Wranglers are a great buy ~ they hold their resale value better then just about any other vehicle PERIOD. That being said just make sure you buy from a soccer mom or somthing that was not abused. Top off doors off is fun and they are very capable stock.

Down side is parts are silly high over priced and reliability is not = to Toyota. Not as many 300K+ Jeeps as Yota's.

Early TJ's with auto's have the trans vent line just over the main shaft in the bell housing. This vent is about hub deep so hub deep water can kill the auto trans. Also steeering Linkage and Dana 35c axle shafts = Weak link.

Wranglers also have a funky key switch to ignition switch pin shaft that breaks and is not sold by Jeep. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/broke-steering-column-ignition-pin-833304/

I wanted a jeep too... then I bought one and other than the bullet proof 4 Cyl. It rusted out and became a red neck yard ornament.

Just sold my TJ last fall after I bought my Tacoma. It just didn't have the space I needed to haul camping stuff for me. No matter how much you spent on your Tacoma for upgrades, the Jeep will empty your pockets faster - there is just so much available. Plus, I am getting a little older (41, lol) and I just wanted a nicer riding vehicle.... very happy with the change.

Please don't do it! I just sold my Jetta to get a Tacoma. It was an 03' 1.8T. It was a nightmare from day one. The check engine light came on constantly. I owned it about 1.5yrs and dumped over 5k in it. These weren't isolated problems with my Jetta either, they all have issues. However, as much problems as I had with it I loved it.

I'm in the same position as you where I drive a ton of miles round trip each day. Buying the tacoma prob wasn't the wisest choice, but I need it for my business. I'm thinking about getting a beater that gets good gas mileage for trips that I don't need the truck for.

Haha most of the terrible taco drivers drive 2nd gens in my experience. The majority of 1st gen owners are much more like a lot of people on here.
There! That'll satisfy your dirty craving. '79/'80ish 40 series with power steering and brakes...you could even fix it up if you wanted (or if needed).

If you want a Jeep, then go buy it! Having driven a Jeep daily for five years, I have two suggestions. Either get a AAA membership with the 100 mile towing range, or carry your tools with you. Good luck!

I'm thinking about buying one as a second vehicle/project. Probably a CJ5 or CJ7 renegade. I would still daily drive my truck though.

    Keep the tacoma....
Save up your money and get a 97 TJ as a spare vehicle and have the best of both worlds.

Or, go even older.....and get a YJ. The 92+ 4.0L YJ's are the best because of the fuel injection, better tranny, & family style rollbar.

You can build a nicely equipped YJ - like the one I had. ANd it's even street friendly up to 70mph on highway.

I had a 1987 4x4 Jeep Comanche pickup which served me well. Wish they still made it. Always wanted a Wrangler but it wouldn't be very practical as a daily driver.
Didn't know they dropped the 4 cylinder.

I actually do like the 4 door wranglers. But would never drive one cause they don't hold up. Also I read a study that wranglers are very popular among the gay male communities! (not that anything is wrong with that):gossip::goingcrazy:

what do you mean they don't hold up? The 4 door have only been out since 2007.

How well has the Tacos been holding up? Not so well in the salt states for the 1st gens. The Jury's still out for the 2nd Gens since they are so much newer. Sure the engines in the 1st gens are time proven but if the structure isn't stout, a good engine does you no good.
