To provide clarification on this, the 5160s have a shorter extended length vs the OME shocks, so you would actaully be getting less down travel running them. The only benefit of the 5160 is the resies, which is more of a shock fade thing. Basically if you don't do a lot of offroading and heat the shocks up the resies are pointless. Also the OME shocks were designed to be used with the Dakars, so compression and rebound is just right.

Oh and they are not on back order that I know of.

To squeeze more down travel out of the Dakars running longer shocks you'll need to run longer brake lines and consider an extension for the e-brake lines as well. Also with longer shocks one must consider shock compressed length to ensure they are still hitting the bumps on up travel.

Just throwing this out there... I've screwed with the rear of my truck many times and this is what I have learned from doing so.

Ah I did not know they were shorter. Why are some folks switching from OME rears to bilstein 5100's? Are the 5100's longer?

On the Toytec website they say the rear shocks are temporally unavailable or something like that.

Standard 5100s are shorter, the extended length 5100 one are too long; compressed legth becomes a problem with them. For those tossing these in I suspect they didn't cycle their suspension to figure this out. If running longer bumps to accomodate for longer collapse length, they are likely gaining no more travel with them.

Well, I sure am glad I asked. I will be sticking to the OME shocks for the rear, which is good because it will save me some cash.

What's a good rear leaf pack that will only give a 3" lift and not add towing or hauling capacity like OZ was saying?

The AllPro leaf pack will get you the lift, still increase capacity over stock, yet is designed to be more flexible for offroad.

The Allpro expedition pack is just as stiff as the Dakars , no ?

    Standard pack, buddy

What bumpstops do most of you guys go with? I am getting the AP Flip Kit and I am not sure if I need $200 bumpstops.

ohh and what bushings did you order? Regular toyota ones?

I have experience with both packs, the AP standards and Dakars, both give about 3".

Both are great packs but I honestly like the Dakars more and here’s why...
The AP packs did do good in the dirt over the bigger rolling bumps (better than the Dakars), but I found them to be a bit too stiff on the road.
The Dakars, IMO, do better on the road and when I needed to tow something they support the weight better thanks the overloads.

Now again they are both great packs, but I just honestly like the versatility of the Dakars and therefore setteled with them over the AP packs.

So if looking to run the truck hard in the dirt hitting bigger bumps, not wash-board stuff, go with the AP standards. If not doing that much offroading and need a pack that’s a bit more versatile, the Dakars seem to work better.

NOTE: Both packs were run with about 100 lbs of weight in the bed at all times, so keep this in mind as well.

This is just my review of both, but yeah both great options for rear lift.

Will be pulling the trigger on the full OME setup soonish, 886s up front with Dakars rear and OME shocks all around.

Lets assume I'm going to put new UCAs in as well as do a u-bolt flip, bumpstops, and extended break lines in the rear.

How long should a couple of mechanically inclined people that have never torn a Tacoma apart expect to spend doing such a thing?

I'm in the same situation and personally I'm not expecting much more than 3 hours, barring any major setbacks, at a leisurely pace. Mind you I got mine all pre assembled so its as easy as taking the old junk out and new stuff right back in.

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.

Two people who have their act together, all of the right tools and parts, and are fairly motivated... 8 hours maximum is my best guess.

I'm chuckling a little bit, but only at your optimism. You'll easily spend an hour torquing all of the bolts to spec, and then rechecking to make sure you didn't miss one. Nothing's that hard about the install, but things like wrestling leaf packs or moving the jack stands from from to rear takes time. You got a pit crew lined up?

Na just a nicely equipped shop. And note the "barring major setbacks" part, I'm fully expecting some parts to be a pain in the ass haha. Just in theory swapping parts shouldn't take that long but I guess 3 hours is a little over zealous since nothing ever goes according to plan
