any thoughts on if you think a wheel alignment would be required after switching from 881 to 883 coils if they're the same height spring? this would be done via disconnecting the ball joint bolts without a spring compressor, also i'd be throwing a winch on the front too so the 883's will be sitting a little lower as well.

my control arms are stock and not very much room left for adjustment, i'd rather not have to dick around with an alignment if possible. i'm thinking it would probably be fine...

Same height spring but the 883 will lift the truck taller. You will most likely need some adjustment.
If the addition of the winch brings the front down, which i don't think it will, you might be ok. get good hub to fender measurements first so you know what you may have gained.

yeah i currently have the 881s and an arb front bumper. i piled the winch (warn 8000 with steel cable) and all the winch components on top of the bumper and it dropped the front end 5/8 of an inch. my 881s are already old and settled.

the 883s will definitely pop the front end up higher, wishful thinking is i could swap in the 883s and after the springs settle + add the weight of the winch would keep me at pretty much the same ride height as the truck is now, ie with 881s but no winch).

i just want to get the winch on without having to get new upper control arms or have to replace the lower control arm bushings/sleeves so i can get it aligned. last alignment i had done the shop tech warned me that everything is pretty seized up and that they were able to get things in spec now but might not be able to next time i need an alignment

I've got 880s on 5100s with a 2.7l. At the 0 setting it netted almost 3". I've installed an Elite Offroad bumper and its sagged a little bit. Next project is to move up to the 1.25" clip and install a HF 12K winch. I'm hoping it'll break even with the winch.

I do not recommend preloading the OME coils.

Any info to back that up? Just curious as to why. It'd be no different than preloading it with the added weight.

881 and 882 are the same coil rate at a different length. An 882 in the same setting as an 881 is "preloaded" more than the 881. I see no problem going up a notch and compressing the coil more. It will lift it some more and it will also create a stiffer ride but that may be ok.

The general consensus on this site is to not preload the OME coils. If you want more lift on the same spring rate, you would ideally want to upgrade to the 882 springs. The 882 is the same spring rate as the 881, but taller. Now do I think you are going to damage anything by bumping your shocks up a notch, no. I just wouldn't recommend that as a fix. I don't like the idea of the shock supporting the weight. That's what the coil is for.

Just for reference on my truck, I have the 883 coils with the 5100's on the zero setting. The 883 is the same height as the 881, but rated to hold extra weight (bumper, winch, skid for me)

How is the shock supporting the weight exactly? That doesn't make sense.

My reasoning with this setup was due to the fact I have a 2.7l. It is slightly lighter than the v6 that the 881 was intended for, so prior to adding the bumper it was 'un'loaded. Now with the 98 pound bumper it is closer to its intended load...more or less.

You said the springs are sagging and you want to raise the height with the shock. Same principle as someone putting a bumper and winch on their truck and not replacing the coils and only installing the 5100's in order to get back to the desired ride height

The coil is still whats holding the weight of the front end up in any of those scenarios..
