Alright guys and gals, my brother could use some advise. He is trying to decide between the 882 coils or the 883 coils

    His set up:
    First gen
    access cab
    camper shell
putting on an All Pro Apex bumper (110-ish pounds)
will also have a winch (80 pounds)

No crazy off roading- comfort is important, really only doing back roads with about max 6-8 inch rocks and ditches. (He's a forester, hunter, all around outdoorsy like myself)

So the reason he's on the fence is he would rather it be a little softer than harder, but doesn't want excessive droop up front or anything. What do you all think?
    Thanks for your help/thoughts!

I have 882s with a similar setup (Elite bumper, 110lb; Warn winch, 55lb and BudBuilt IFS skid, 55lb) and they ride soft and flexy. I like how they feel for rock crawling. Quick braking on pavement can be a little unsettling with lots of nose dive. I have no experience with 883s.

With that amount of weight, I don't think either choice will be wrong.

If the end ride height is not to his liking, he can always add a small top plate spacer, 1/4", 10mm or 1/2" are available via Toytec or Wheeler's. Just be sure to get the mid length studs installed the first time so you don't have to pay to have the C/Os disassembled to add them.

I am running 1/2" top plate spacers with my 882s but have no weight in the back and want the truck level.

BTW, the 1st Gens did not come in an access cab. The extra cab has no suicide door. But I knew what you meant. :)

Lots of people running 882s with that much weight up front and love them. I have 883s with a plate bumper but no winch(yet) and really like the ride. I haven't run 882s before but I'd imagine they'd be a little softer ride.

That being said, I love my 883s. My off-roading is pretty much what you described and I think it's perfect for that. It'll be interesting to see what the weight of a winch will do to the ride/height though.

Thanks for the info! Ya it looks like he has a very similar set up too you. I think your advice will be incredibly insightful. I think its a good point that he can always throw in the top plate spacer if he doesnt like it as much. Easier to go "up" with the suspension with a little add in like that then "down" if that makes any sense haha.

Tomtom, so you have measurements from hub to fender up front? I'd like to know the height difference. Even though you're much heavier up front than I am at this point.

Yeah, I really don't think either choice will be wrong.

I doubt you'll see much change in your ride height, maybe a 1/10 of an inch. I got the Warn m8000s because factory specs said it was about 55 lbs with the synthetic line. Didn't even notice a change and I was hoping to bring down the nose a little to ease the CV angles.

Just took measurements on the front of my truck. 24" passenger and 23.5" driver. That's only half an inch drop from where it sat after I installed them over a year ago. And with a couple months after the bumper. Not bad at all. Definitely smoothed out the ride too.

I'm sitting 23" on driver side, 23.5" on passenger side.

Yes but I'm a fanboi. I've been running OME since 1999. First on my Jeep XJ, then on my Tacoma. About the only thing I would replace them with are Icons.

Thanks guys, I sent my brother the link to this thread so he can look it over and he is really appreciative of the help! He was also very impressed with the rapid responses. I'll let you know what he ends up getting! I think he ordered the bumper tonight though, that should be fun

Dang, didn't get my .02 in :) loving my 882's, and Dakar packs. Planning to add a winch on my tg bumper soon, and some 1/4" top plate spacers.

They make suspension components for a bunch of vehicles. I have their shocks, springs, leaf, and aal. A google search should yield good results on all of their product. I bought from wheelers offroad, but many here also buy through cruiser outfitters.

I did the mistake of not making sure which ome coil springs the dealer installed on my truck, is there a way to know if they are 881 882 or something else, can i measure their thickness for example and know? Thanks

They should have a sticker tag on one of the coil branches unless it was removed
