I currently am running 5100s with oem coils set at 2.5" and hate the ride. so Ive decided to swap out the oem coils for some OME 885s and set the 5100s back at 0" and see where that gets me. My question is do I need to do the carrier bearing drop kit for this lift? and what about the diff drop??

CB drop is dependent on the vibes and I wouldn't bother with the DD kit :)

in other words - lift - if you don't have vibes then leave it be, if ya get some try a CB drop kit = they only take about 5 minutes to install so no harm there in the even its needed

The carrier bearing drop corrects the rear driveshaft. Are you changing anything in the back?

I didn't use a diff drop on my lift of about 2" and it looks like to me that it doesn't really help on a 2nd gen like it did on 1st gen Tacoma and the old 86-95 trucks.

just an AAL in the rear and the 5100s. No vibes so far but i do have a pretty bad steering wheel shake at 45-55mph im also trying to sort out and hopefully correct while swapping these out. didnt know if it could possibly be from off geometry due to no CB drop or diff drop..

Got it, you have lifted the rear already. I used the OME carrier drop with my CS047R springs but it's only a slight correction. It's easy to try.

The diff drop is more of a diff rotation on 2nd gens. You change the CV angle in one plane but change them in another. Plus you change the from driveshaft angles. So from what I read doing it usually eliminates one vibe but introduces another.

has anyone else experienced the steering wheel wobble at 45-55 mph? ive had a recent alignment and new wheels and tires. could a wheel bearing be shot or something? Sorry im getting a little off topic from the lift question..

It's so hard to say for sure. Yeah, a wheel bearing could be going. Did the steering wheel shake just start when you lifted the truck? It could be caster angle (still using stock UCAs?), driveshaft u-joints, steering rack bushings, any number of things. I also wouldn't 100% trust a new alignment or wheels/tires. I've had brand new tires that weren't perfectly balanced due to being slightly out of round. A re-balance fixed it in that case for me. You can try rotating the tires front to back to see if helps or changes anything.

Just a little info on the original question...

In MY experience, 885 coils lift the front exactly the same amount as stock coils with 5100s set at the 1.75" setting.

As for your steering wheel wobble...

I would guess that whoever put the front wheels on last put the first couple lug nuts on too tight and the wheel is a hair off center. Every time the tire shop guys do anything to my truck, I have to go back and loosen all 4 wheels and retighten/ retorque them myself for a smooth ride. Those monkeys shouldn't be allowed to have pneumatic tools (I used to be one of them).

thanks ill give that a shot and see if that helps. as for the coil question. if that was the case can i run the 885's with the 5100s on the first setting up? im running 285s so i dont want to do the swap and then be super rubbing and have to go back to the trimming drawing board.

I thought that when running the OME coils on 5100 shocks, you're not supposed to run them on anything other than the lowest setting :notsure:

    True

    Here's a little secret most don't know...

5100s have a significant amount of up travel engineered into them, under the assumption people will run spacer lifts. You can add up to a 1/2" spacer for an extra 1" of lift and not bottom out the shocks. There's a great thread where a member did the dirty work to figure this out. I'll look for it.

You still don't want to go over 3" total for the sake of your CV boots.

IIRC, that is a fucking expensive mod. I haven't looked into it in awhile though. Now that I have the push button 2wd low range mod, I could care about manual hubs.
