    Hello,
I'm new here to the forum.

I've been looking to get a Tacoma TRD Off-Road or Pro. I've driven a RAM 1500 for a number of years, but I am looking for something a bit smaller (more manageable) in city traffic/parking.

Does anyone have any seat-time comparing a 3rd gen TRD Off-road and Pro? I'm really interested in the on-road driveability.

I will be driving on typical Michigan roads -- paved with lots of pot-holes.

    Thanks in advance.

    - Nico

I drove my trd offroad for 15k miles with the stock suspension. It was all over the road, bounced like a frog, and just in general was not fun.
About 1k miles ago I put trd pro suspension on, and its a world better. Its controlled, no more bouncing. It just soaks up bumps in the roads.

I live in MN, so our roads look like bombed out war zones by the time spring shows up.

I dont do much offroad, or really any at this point. So my time has all been on highways and side streets. I am also using the same tires that came with the truck.

    5nahalf,

    Thank you!

How much does it cost to upgrade to that suspension

I was amazed with how different the truck felt after putting in the pro suspension. After you take out the stock ones, you see how tiny they are. Its almost like they are undersized for the truck.

Normal price for used pro suspension is around $1000-$1500. Then usually around $400-$500 for install.

Tons of other suspension, and shock choices, ranging in price greatly. On the cheaper end, check out the Bilstein 5100’s. Headstrongoffroad.com is a big favorite here to compare shocks.

Get the off road, put on a better suspension. it'll still be cheaper than a pro

I find the Pro Suspension to not be all that great. I prefer the OR suspension as it is softer.

That being said I have a second gen pro suspension on my truck anyways, so I kind of split the difference.

The 3rd gen OR is a way smoother & tighter ride compared to the bounce of the 2nd gen OR.

IDK, I think you need to test drive some trucks, I love my OR stock suspension on road feel.

Ive got 120k on my trd offroad suspension and i have had ZERO issues both on road and offroad.

That being said, I will be upgrading soon to Bilstein 6112’s up front and 5160’s in the rear for better performance and capability off road. From what I have read, they do great on road as well. Its a 2nd gen, but figured id chime in given the amount of miles the stock suspension has seen.

Test drive and see what you prefer, some people like a soft ride, some people like a firm ride. IMO the OR suspension is quite comfortable for daily driving, but I personally like a firmer and sportier ride. I am going to be changing out to some Bilstein 6112s and 5160s. If you don’t care about the extra stuff the Pro comes with then save and go with the OR and just upgrade the suspension. If you like the entire Pro package (which I think is awesome) then go with the Pro!

Really, it was terrible, I had the dealer check it 4 times, aligned it 3 times, it was just awful. I think MN roads didnt help, many of our highways are very wavy, and the freeze/thaw will break a road in 2 years.

MN road crews work slow and do crap work. They know they get paid and the road will need to be replaced again soon. So they just do a shit job. I mean, we did have a major bridge just fall down because some birds pooped on it (35 bridge)

I test drove both models, and I went with the Pro. The OR wallowed around in turns and dove under braking too much for my tastes.
I'm not planning to do any suspension work anytime soon, so I'm quite satisfied with the Fox setup.

This has to be hyperbole. I'm sorry, I'm not anti-Pro in any way, I couldn't care less what other people want to spend their money on... but all over the road bouncing like a frog? I *cough*bullshit*cough* can't stop *cough*bullshit*cough* coughing, sorry, must be something in my throat.

My truck still has stock suspension on it. Drives perfectly fine. Better than the Jeep I previously had, but that's not much of a comparison. Drives in a straight line all on its own, almost like it's a Tesla.
