I would not go near Oregon Inlet on a kayak. We fish at the inlet a lot, it’s like a swift river there.

As the others have said, it can be extremely dangerous, but rewarding at the same time. I personally would stay away if it was my first time. Launch behind the light house and paddle north. You’ll find a few very nice places to fish, there will still be current, but it’s much more manageable.

Down town Manteo is a very good trout spot early in the morning from boat/yak this time of year. There’s a ramp at the end of Ananias Dare before the bridge that goes to festival park. Just be careful of the asses in boats flying by.

There’s another ramp off California lane behind the water treatment place in Manteo that will take you to the west side of the island, again, very good place to fish and little boat traffic (normally). About a mile paddle will bring you to the new manns harbor bridge.

Even if I were to put in near the ramp and paddle north it’s still pretty swift? I wasn’t planing to go anywhere near the actually inlet as I’ve surf fished it many times and you can tell it’s angry out there lol

To the north along the shore you’ll have small islands, flats and channels. I’ve waded, yaked and boated in that area. Pick your days right and you’ll be just fine. Light west winds seem to be best cause it pushes the water and bait up in those areas. Bring a couple gallons of bug spray as well.

Hell yeah thanks for the info. I learned the hard way about the mosquitos down there on the sound side in my RTT 2 years ago. Woke up with at least 100 of em flying in the tent. Lol

No problem. I spend a couple days in the late October in the back of my truck down in Avon, a lot better when it comes to the bugs. We spend 4 days every year in September at Frisco woods campground and it is absolutely brutal. Multiple citronella candles, bug spray, a couple thermocells and a couple still make it through.

Good to see this thread active again :)

I didn't make it to my favorite barrier islands last summer (for obvious reasons LOL)but we have a lil cottage booked on ocracoke in a couple weeks.
Got my beach driving pass and fishing license. The anticipation is building :goingcrazy:

Currently I live in Denver but own a beach house near Goombays. I’ll start to post when my wife & I plan to hit it up each summer. Not sure if we’re going to make it this summer but we’re going to try!!

Haven’t seen any big blues, but there’s plenty of smaller ones and Spanish mixed in. remember the new regs are 3 at 12” minimum a day now for blues. There’s still plenty of drum. Weather hasn’t really been cooperating lately though. I’m headed Avon/Frisco tomorrow to show my New York buddy around and probably fish a little. I’ll report back… if there’s anything to report

    Nice
I’m planning to chuck some bait with fish finder rigs but I’d also like to fish artificials for those blues and Spanish you mentioned and whatever else is lurking

If you don’t mind, what should I be tossing at them?

Anybody feel free to contribute lol

caught a hand full of mullet a single blue and got bit off my a shark after a couple cool acrobatic moves. It’s nice buxton south. Everything north is muddy and cold.

generally you’ll see people throwing sting silvers for blues and Spanish. Pretty much a painted piece of lead with paint and a trebble. Cast as far as you can, crank in medium fast and then adjust your retrieve if you’re not getting anything. Very user friendly lure.

I don't go up north very much, we usually go south to Avon or Ocracoke. There is a village named Carova all the way up at the VA line that's only accessible by driving up the beach. There is a fence out into the water at the VA line. Whalehead Club and the Corolla Lighthouse are good things to see. You might see the wild horses up there too, just don't mess with them.

Diamond jigs are also usually really good for blues or anything aggessive and chasing really.

Plenty of love, but they’ll get cut up rather quickly. If there’s anything with teeth around, they stay tucked away in the bag.

Cravings in duck has pretty good food. I prefer their lunch over dinners mostly due to traffic and prices. The wahoo fish tacos are absolutely amazing.

A very good bar, probably 20-25min south of duck is lucky 12 tavern. It can get a little loud but they have a great beer selection and very good food as well, both bar food and entrées.

light houses are always a “must see” that I recommend just because of the amount of history involved with them surrounding the outer banks and graveyard of the atlantic(there’s a museum about the graveyard of the atlantic on the southern end of hatteras island as well). The lost colony in Manteo is also a great place to go learn about the natives as well as the first English settlers.. that is if you’re into that kind of stuff.
