Hi all. Looking for a decent over and under but have a limited budget.

Looking at either a Stevens 555 or a Winchester sporting 101. Any thoughts?

Also would consider a stoeger match or and Mossberg silver reserve

For what it's worth...I own a Browning Superposed and a Beretta 686 along with numerous SXSs.

Advice I was given a long time ago...buy once cry once and it has to fit you or you won't be happy with it regardless of price.

With that said...I've been thinking about an inexpensive O/U in 20ga for Turkeys. I've looked at the ones you have listed and leaning towards CZ-USA. I've seen several recently on Gunbroker for <$500 shipped.

BTW, I thought the Winchester 101 Sporting was around $2K?

If your budget is around 1K, personally I think you would be better off trying to add a couple hundred dollars to your budget and find a nice used B gun (Berretta or Browning). It will hold its value better than the other options you listed and it will still function. They can easily go 100K rounds before needing an adjustment.

I'm leaning toward the Winchester atm . I went to bass pro and shouldered all 4 of them.

Haven't looked at the cz. I'll take a look .

Also, with shotguns, it all about the 'fit'. More than likely, Bass Pro doesn't have anyone working there that can actually measure you and make suggestions for fit. I would try to find a small local shop with someone that knows how to fit first, and then go from there. Some dimensions can be changed (i.e. smaller or slightly longer LOP), but some (like cast and drop) cost more to change in some cases (some semi-autos have adjustable shims for cast and drop).

I have the CZ Drake, and I like it a lot for what it cost me. It's not as handsome as that Winchester, but I've killed a ton of roosters with it with no issues.

What’s a Citori going for these days? I shoot mine well.
My stepdad gave a a pair of silver pigeons O/U and SXS and I can’t hit crap with them. They don fit me that well.

I have a Winchester SXS that will replace both of them. Natural fit.

    Where do you live OP?

For an over under $1000 for a new high quality gun is a bit tight but I’d look at the Franchi Instinct or CZ. Both of these manufacturers make good guns for the money and an O/U carries less risk than getting a potentially finicky semi-auto, even though there are several good ones out there.

If you are set on an O/U then get one and get the one that has the best feel for the price range you are in. To me the shotgun I’m most comfortable shouldering is generally what I’m carrying. If you like the Winchester then go for it, but I’d look hard at the Franchi simply because of the value aspect for that price range. You could also consider the Weatherby Orion.

FWIW, my next shotgun will likely be a side by side! Best of luck to you.

with a limited budget, for under 500 bucks my stoeger has never missed a beat... I consider it cheap and reliable.

don't own a mossberg O/U, but none the less have never missed a beat on any of my mossberg pumps that have all been acquired for well under 1k, I would expect their O/U to be on par...

not sure I myself personally consider $1k+ a limited budget, but if pulverizing clays and hunting was the objective... you get what you pay for I believe is the saying.

I like my savage bolt rifle, but I do not like these stevens 555. Have come across some poor reviews online, but with enough searching you can always find a bad review on anything and everything I suppose.

does your cabelas or bp ever get in some older used O/Us?? could be worth it if you come across the right trade in.

I would note that my local Basspro will order just about any kind of gun you want, even if it’s something that they don’t usually carry. Maybe he could score a new CZ. For the money it’s a fine gun.
