So even though you set the zone it'll still end up going to CAL mode? Try just setting it on your zone and see if that work.

I tried that and yes it still is locked essentially in calibration mode. Which I guess all this makes senses because the vss isn't connected so the unit thinks the vehicle isn't moving at all.

You guys are awesome @adio:bowdown:, and @Up2NoGood:bowdown:!! I went out this morning, hooked into wire number one and drove to the gas station. About half way there voila it worked! :D:D:thumbsup::bananadance:. That's the positive side. The negative is my neighbors are probably keeping a close eye on me because yesterday I'm driving around in circles in a playground parking lot and today I have a bunch of wires hanging from my roof, screaming in excitement driving down the road haha. Thank you guys so much. I love having a fully functional overhead console instead of 2 sunglasses holders.

So you couldn't wait until I could help you out? I figured lol. Looks great Dave, good job. I think the only way for you to properly thank everyone is to do a proper write up since I imagine we will soon be starting a console trend here on TW :D :fingerscrossed:
    You @adio & @Up2NoGood are a bunch of badasses

That piece is not swappable lol. What I did was take out the front sunglasses holder, then take out the digital display and put that in. I used an exacto knife to cut the plastic welds and then expoxy to put it back together. I can do the swap for free if you send me both consoles :D

Oh so instead of swapping the entire console, you just swapped the front sunglass section? hmm id what I want to do, I was just planning on doing a full swap, maybe I can relocate the mic? I'm sure there are threads on it. I will compare both consoles when it comes in and see if I'm comfortable with cutting it out and make a decision after I look things over. Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it. I will keep you updated on what i decide to do.

Great to hear you got it working.

So was it the VSS wire after all?

Finally changed out the screen to that green/blue-ish look. More in line with the display on any rear view mirrors.
    Before.

Screen is from 97-01 Ford Explorer. Tried looking for one that had the cool white, but couldn't find anything.

Original screen that you need to re-solder and replace with the 97-01 Explorer screen.

Not an expert at soldering as you can see haha. As long as the solder is in good contact it'll work.

Is there a specific temperature probe I need? Or any special wiring?

No real special wiring. You should already have the probe attached to your horn support bracket in front of the radiator. You'll just run two wires into the cab from that probe to your console. Then power, ground, and switched power, and you'll need a vss input. On the back of the radio it's the purple with white stripe. The vss gives the until the compass input. The wiring is all listed here.

Here's a pic of the temp probe so you know what you're looking for.
