So the droop of the wheel will be limited by the shock. If you want the full range that the Dakar spring will allow then you’ll need different shocks with more extension but you’ll also likely need taller bump stops.

I’ve seen people use Bilstein B110’s as they have extension up to like 27 inches. But yea they use taller bump stops because those only compress to like 16.3 inches

Is there also the potential to damage the shock when the range of the leaf exceeds the shock's range?

No more so then stock. From what I understand the shock is the limiting factor on the stock setup. Some people control this with limit straps in long travel setups

Agreed. My understanding is that even at stock setup, the shock is the limiting factor for extension. Where you run into big problems is if the shock is the limiting factor on compression instead of your bump stop.

So yea when you increase the length of extension, your compressed length is generally also increased. Thus if you’re not careful, your shock can bottom out before you hit the bump stop and it can bust.

The compression length of the 5160 is 14 inches, which I believe is similar to stock. So I’m good there.

But yea I’ve heard some people use straps to prevent stresses on the shocks on extension.

Also... the 5160 has the same compression and extension lengths as the OME rear shocks that they sell with the leaf pack. So should be gtg. 4wheelparts installed my setup and they measured things and said it was safe.

I was told by Bilstein directly that using the 5160s with leaf packs that are rated to anything higher than 2 inches would top out the shocks often and cause premature wear sooner and possible leakage.

I mean that’s probably true, but with all the weight I have the leafs sit the truck about only 2 inches above stock.

And they’re relatively cheap anyways, which is the beauty of using them!

So the shocks are awesome for an Overlanding rig. They’re digressive so they provide a lot of resistance early on, which includes during extension. Do body roll with a heavy rig is MUCH improved and noticeable on and off the road. They’re digressive on compression too so you feel washboards but they’re damped decently well.

The leaf springs are nice. I have the heavy Dakar leaf springs and with an empty bed, they kinda stiff but not so bad. With a couple hundred pounds it’s nice (which I typically do, Diamondback cover and steel racks).

Love the build! Just ordered same shock setup. Contemplating Dakar mediums.
(Carry little to no weight). Nice to see you’re on stock UCA’s. Hopefully I can get away with that.

Was dead set on 285’s but your setup is making me rethink.

Did you do the front needle bearing? How about rear shims or rear carrier bearing drop kit?

I sorta wish I did 285s... but I’m happy that I was able to use stock rims and no trimming whatsoever. Which is sorta worth it! (Plus 265/75/16 KO2’s are super cheap). Oh but I see you have a sport though and thus 17 inch rims...

I didn’t do any needle bearing or shims and good so far :/

I went back and forth between medium and heavy dakars... how much do you plan on putting in the rear with your full setup?

Here’s a link to my thread showing the build with a completely empty bed with heavy Dakar’s and hub-fender measurements.

Not to be bashing on Dakars here. I have them on my truck HDs for over a year now. I use them and go off-roading on fun adventures. My biggest gripe about them though is that they are chewing away at my hangers. See the pics below. I have gone through the trouble shooting. Everything is tight! Hangers are not bent yet. Contact is made on both the passenger and driver side. Both sides of the shackle show signs of contact.

Which CB setup are you using? any grinding to get good contact for the antenna? I am currently troubleshooting a CB I just installed, getting a high SWR...

You’ll probably be fine with medium Dakar’s. And if you need more weight in the future can consider doing airbags instead of adding a leaf
