Depends just where your planning to overland !!

Quite a different load out between the jungle and the Arctic or the far reaches of the Mall parking lot

Laughed pretty good when I read this. I'm currently at drool some more since coming to the realization that my wallet and overlanding are currently on different planets. Baby steps right?

There was a thread going around called 'I hate to ask' or 'I have to ask' that has some good videos. I'll see if I can dig it up.

    Found it

You need to have a idea on where you want to go. This is my “overlanding rig” which happens to also be my DD. Icon extended travel upfront with OME Dakar’s I’m back for heavier loads, ARB bar with smittybilt winch, 255/85/16 BFG mud terrains. The ARE shell holds everything I need in the bed as well as acting as a weather barrier and lockable storage

Fox 2.0 Coilovers in the front and Fox 2.0’s in the rear, Total Chaos UCA’s, Al-lpro expo leafs, K&N cold air intake, TRD headers,Magnaflow catback exhaust,URD short throw shifter, switched out my 60/40 bench seat for some Tacoma Limited seats, Replaced the vinyl shift boot for a leather one, completely soundproofed the cab w/ Frost King. Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. MX series camper shell. All-Pro Apex front bumper w/ All-Pro skid plates all the way back to the Trans. Low Range fuel skid plate.

Go to Overland Expo. You’ll learn a lot from speaking directly to vendors.

OME HD Lift all around, SCS SR8 Rims, 255 85 R16 Cooper ST Maxx, Decked Drawers, 30" Rigid Pro Light bar above bumper on Rago Mounts, Rigid Dually Side Shooters on Rago ditch brackets, Hondo Garage Un-Holey Phone Mount X2, Hondo Radio Knobs AR Bolt Face, Garmin InReach SE GPS synch'ed to Iphone for GPS only mapping, Wet Okole Seat Covers, Husky Liner Contour floor mats, 63 QT ARB Fridge on Alu-Cab tilting slide. GoFastCamper (#41), ARB 2500 Awning with Full Room, Mobtown Off-road Sliders and Full Aluminum Skids.
I’m working on my first Tacoma Adventure build right now. Had a few others, Full Size 2500 Crew Cab/ Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, even an old school Jeep XJ Cherokee. My thoughts keep it simple(ish) and light. I have a deposit down on a new GoFastCamper (search Hondo Garage on this forum). Don’t get me wrong a full on Goose Gear “kitchen” for 6K is neat to have... but for most of use keeping it light, simple, and MODULAR is much easier and cheaper in the long run. I’m a guy who changes vehicles a lot so i try not to get locked into anything one vehicle specific.

My first thought was to build a RTT on a low profile bed bar over a Tonneau cover KBVoodoo on here makes a GREAT option. That way your clearance will remain low and you can still have lockable storage for your gear, in the end the GFC won out for my particular needs.

Check out Expedition Portal for a lot of cool ideas

Loooooong story short, use what you have, get out and see what adjustments you need to make, and get out some more. While obsessing over build details is WAY fun it kind of misses the point of adventure. Good luck!!! Have fun.
