What level do you usually suggest to a daily driver with a manual transmission?

I start people on Med for the current Manual tunes. Some bump up to spicy. I have not been asked for anything higher than that on the current manual tunes for the 3.5L. This is just my experience here in Utah. Other tuners can chime in with theirs.

Don't be shy about testing the different choices, especially if you are driving a decent distance to get tuned or if the tuner only comes through once a month. Test them and see what you like.

Thanks for the input. The local tuner is only about 20 miles from me. I'll probably schedule it for this summer.

Virtually all manuals I've tuned have started with Medium to begin with and have been content enough to leave it at that. But don't be shy about trying Medium and then a different one to compare while you're there with your tuner.

I been thinking about doing this OTT tune but I have some concerns. I have a new 2023 TRD OR so it comes with the free 2yr Toyota care plan stuff oil change and etc, can a dealer by any chance see I have had a tune done? I don't want to void my warranty I bought. And what's the long term effects of running these Tunes for 7+yrs lets say?

    * Sets timer for 7 years to respond to this question *

I have a 2021 with an 8 year extended warranty. It's a good question that has been indirectly answered on this thread a few times. In short, it's always a risk with any mod but of all the feedback on forums, websites and video reviews, I couldn't find an example of anyone having their warranty voided due to this tune. It's hard to find a single person who didn't experience a drastic improvement in the drive quality. So for me, it's a mod worth having and I accept the possible risk, (although I have no evidence to suggest that there is one) that this tune in some way could be an excuse for Toyota to void my warranty. BUT, you can always flash it back to factory settings whenever you want. So it's not like it's irreversible.

It is a substantial improvement in the shift points when driving. It also gives the Tacoma much better throttle response so if feels like there is more power. It's night and day more enjoyable to drive, IMO... People have been tuning Tacomas for years without any issues and of everyone in the tuning business, OTT seems to be at the top.

It's always nerve-racking with a new truck, I know. I think any long term effect would be on my mental status. I can't imagine having my Tacoma for 7 years driving how it did before the tune :D

The tunes are reversible. Just flash back to stock before any dealer visit and they’ll never know.

I can totally understand why some people, especially that purchased the extended warranty....me being one of them, would prefer to not do the tune because the risk of voiding your warranty. Take this from a Warranty Administrator at a dealership. You're not voiding your warranty. Your other components on your vehicle not related to the powertrain tune itself will be covered in the event of a defect, meaning your Warranty is still active. Door Actuators, latches, receivers, modules, motors, seat elements, a/c components, etc... a ton of stuff. You're warranty is still active. One thing will not void your whole warranty. You are however giving a dealership a card in there back pocket by having a Tune, and if a Tech interrogates the system because of a CEL, yeah you're giving them something to point their finger at. But like mentioned before, Tunes are reversible.

I have had multiple Toyota vehicles tuned since 2019. I simply take my vehicles to the dealer for regular service without issue, with the tune in place. My 2017 Tacoma was tuned from 30,000 miles until 97,000 miles when it got rear ended and totaled. I had all my maintenance done at the dealer without issue. Truck was running great until it got sandwiched between a GMC Denali and Nissan Frontier.

I recently took my OTT tuned 2021 4Runner in for a 30,000 mile service and emissions testing. It’s been tuned for 10,000 miles. They did the service, and it passed emissions just fine. That’s here in Utah, and my personal experience. Can’t speak for others.

Depends on vehicle, some can be done with HP Tuner and many/most are done with VF Tuner.

Get VFTuner and do the tunes yourself. It's easy. That way, you can go back to stock when you take it to the dealer if that worries you. I leave the tune on mine. The service manager where I take mine was actually talking about tunes with me. He has a different one on his truck than I have on mine and we were comparing them. He said it's needed with these trucks because of how they are stock. Didn't care at all.
