Amazing how much Toyota ‘mailed it in’ so-to-speak on the coding portion of the ecu/tcu.

You say you’re coding a 3D table that is closed loop... what does that mean in terms of inputs and outputs? What sensors are involved and what controls are being fed the numbers that the table spits out? (I’m a nerdy engineer myself.)

This all sounds like very impressive engineering, but it also sounds like things could go sideways in a hurry. Are there any protections being added or are the tables being added/developed bulletproof?

Tables are tested and the code is refined until it works as needed. Protections (like fueling) is limited in what's possible due to the nature of the stock code, and limit of the stock 02 sensor. So we are adding protections on the ignition side if there is a lean-out situation.
The reason we can't on the fuel side is the stock primary 02 sensors aren't very good widebands. The lowest they even will register is 11.97 AFR. Anything under that it can't detect.
And when the AFR is richer than 14.7, the ECU is in open loop, and doesn't care what is going on, it just uses it's preset tables and calculations and whatever the "AFR" is it is.

It's a strategy most manufacturers stop using many years ago. *Most* calibrations these days use full time closed loop feedback and wide ratio fuel sensors. Toyota stuff is like old early 2000s nissan with limited 02 sensors and simple fuel exit strategies.

10-4, Hope I didn't come off as second guessing the enormous amount of hard work you are obvious putting into this. I know the risk will never be 0% with aftermarket power add-ons, especially with something like a TC or SC, but just want to make sure risk of damage is being limited as much as possible. I am looking to maybe add the SC kit for a little more oomph when towing. Thanks for stopping in here to keep us in the loop about the progress!! Can't wait for more details.

Edit: reread your response again, are the limited O2 sensors just limited by themselves or also the ECU? Why not include some better wideband O2 sensors with the kit? Would they add that much cost or not be plug and play?

I’m just throwing this out there for discussion.

At what point is it easier, simpler to have a new wire harness made in conjunction with a new ECM like a holly dominator? Obviously not cheeper, but capable of doing closed loop with more data inputs.

Limit of stock sensors and code. Adding an external wideband to the ECU and having it use that signal to control fuel is way too hard to even attempt.

To make it run and drive and function like a stock tacoma would cost almost as much as the truck itself.

Speaking of a lean-out situation, which can be a common problem depending on boost numbers on the turbo or pulley size on the supercharger or altitude (7000 feet) vs sea level.
Curious if the potential buyers should look into a (boost controler) boost combo AFR Gauge that has an O2 CUT indicator or solenoid cut for the supercharger and turbo?
These Gauges actually cut the boost if the Turbo or supercharger is running lean so it doesn’t blow up your motor. You can program whatever lean number or parameters with these Gauges to the CUT.
Or for the turbo if it runs into an over boosted situation it will cut that too.

My boost AFR combo gauge gives me a warning indication that says “02 Cut” on the top right corner if my AFR numbers hits my preset lean number So I know I’m running safe or there is an issue to address.

Personally I love this gauge, with lots of options and to protect your motor knowing all the vital info.

Adding a wideband/boost failsafe gauge is definitely a good tool to have. In my prior vr6 turbo and miata turbo builds I would get those setup and working before actually boosting the car. I used AEMs option on those two but Innovate products are also top notch. I was blown away my 2014 silverado was on a narrowband sensor too like the Toyotas. I've been spoiled with my Volkswagens having factory widebands.

Agreed, even a quick 2 minute video to see/hear it in action would be AMAZING.

Evos don't have map sensors...something along the lines of placing maf before turbo then finding the limiting hz readings?

A lot of people who fun high end Evos end up using aftermarket ECM and run wideband 02s, when your engine cost 15grand a cheap system wont cut it
