    I cruise at 75 around 2,000-2,200 rpm with 35s and 5.29s

there is only like a 200 rpm difference between 4.88 and 5.29. But gears are one of those things you only want to do once. And that extra 200 rpm or so really pays off on the highway.

Exactly, which is why I still would recommend 5.29s even for a stock AT.

    Man
I’m gonna make a comment a little out of my knowledge and I’m gonna go research it later

but this occurred to me this morning after OVs post

If this taco motor really reaches into the 500whp and so on and so forth

if you have your factory Toyota gears in the rear
And you give it the juice

    man
It’s more than likely all gonna let go like a grenade...

I cannot imagine a factory Toyota AT truck rear gears in a sport or off-road model handling that much power.

Cause my whole rear axel went boom at 25k miles ODO just driving down the city roads to get from food back to my house

and the factory gears at least in second gen tacomas were notoriously weak even in nitro gear and ARB ect ect ect

    Edit:
I don’t mean to imply the gears would fail immediately after the tune and boost of choice

but man it’s not gonna take long

I agree if its a sport. if its a OR / PRO / MT they have a 8.75" rear end instead of the 8" in the AT (non OR/PRO) and I have yet to see someone explode one of those.

yeah, but those 8.75's are pretty new and it's not like those units have been put through the high powered ringer yet. i like the idea of big power on this truck, too, but i'm also seeing that in reality as a likely $25k project because of these details. the question with 500+ is where is the weakest link? and then the next one... there will be more than one.

    Easy

    first it’s your axel
Then it’s gonna be your leaf springs
Then it’s gonna be the frame

then it’s gonna be ladder bars to reduce twist and dive or rise of the axel under load and brakes

Then it will be brakes or brake booster
Then I’d imagine it’ll start being direct driveline like driveshaft joints

Mind you all of this is based on use in 2wd

in 4wd you will have more planted instant response when you tell it to go

but that means a litany if other issues in that scenario

my first guess would be unit bearings and then spindles

Edit: at a certain level the severity of these listed plausible problems will just come down to your maintenance and keeping up on it before things become issues

like fixing leaks or changing fluids more frequently
    More hardware checks ect

4.88 or 5.29 for a tt setup? I’m thinking 4.88 with force injection would be The ideal combination.

i previously mentioned somewhere that I'm into the TT idea on this truck, but would only do it as a complete custom rebuild with all that, or just whatever is needed realistically. I'm calling it $100k LT go nuts rebuild. maybe it's a dream but I've made those reality before, so I'm sure i can do it. but this is my DD now.

Full floater replacement axel with 35 spline axels and a beefy 9” or 10” is gonna be in the ballpark of 5-6k depending on what level of specs you want in it.

front suspension long travel you’re looking around 10k said and done maybe a little more
    -shocks
    - new uppers and lowers
    -new axels
-long travel related gusseting like frame or spindle gussets

then you’re looking at 1600 ish for heavy duty leafs (I’m aiming a bit high on the price)
    And then you’ll need
    -new shackles
    -new perches
    Nuts and bolts stuff

Unless you’re gonna link the truck in the rear

    then
    It’s a lot more

links alone for my truck were 3k
Then cage and whatnot will be easily 15-20k by the end (total front to rear)

plus a new fuel cell... that’ll be 3-5k plus all the needed junk with that..

and seats will probably set you back about 2700 for a 4 seater

and gears front and rear will probably be in the 3-4k range depending on manufacturers and install cost

I thought 4lo actually multiples torque to the front and rear axles far surpassing what the expected increased in torque from the two snails or supercharger.

There are a couple class actions I’ve seen here and there in regards to the 16’s and 17’s having warped axel shafts from the factory.

    but
Improper fill of fluids can always contribute to early failures
