But will they work with the turbs? I was under the impression there would be custom downpipes bolting up to them

Ya’ll think this all stock truck would need regearing and turbos, or will FI overcome the terrible gearing?

Depends on what you're trying to do with your truck, and your expectations.

I'm gonna say twin turbos should do a hell of alot for a stock truck in nearly all scenerios.

Of course turbos AND regearing would probably be better offroad in some situations.

With the amount of low end torque at disposal, I would say wait on the regear. If you aren’t happy, you can easily do the regear down the road. Honestly, I would be shocked if anyone with a 33 or less tire was still complaining about gear ratios after the TT install, considering the amount of torque they’re making down low.

    You will want both.

Remember, every truck on the planet is already forced induction since barometric pressure is around 14psi at sea level.

a turbo simply forces more air down its throat than our standard atmospheric pressure.

anything you’d do when naturally aspirated is compounded when you do the same while forced induction.

also, a turbo wants exhaust volume to drive the turbine. There is far more volume when in the power band than slightly before the power band.

gearing puts you deeper into the power band at every single circumstance. This drives the turbine harder at every single circumstance.

doing only the turbos but not gearing is leaving a whole lot of power, efficiency, and fun on the table that isn’t that far out of grasp and may as well be had;)

While I agree with your “you’ll want both”, saying every truck is FI because atmospheric pressure is 14psi/1 Bar is playing pretty fast and loose with technicalities. You even go on to say that “a turbo simply forces more air”, hence “FORCED induction”. How can it be forced if there is no turbo/SC?
It is not accurate to say that a NA vehicle is FI just because air is at 14 psi. Atmospheric air pressure is a given, a starting point. FI crams more air in there raising the pressure beyond ATM. With your logic all boost gages would start at 14psi.

My logic in suggesting he should wait it out was based off the truck having ample torque *available under most normal driving circumstances (with the TT setup, of course.) Boost with these little turbos will be nearly instantaneous, also shown by the graphs posted, simply requiring a press of the throttle.

At the end of the day though, it’s not my money and whatever make someone happy is fine by me. Personally, I’m taking my money and putting it where I get the most return for my investment. For me, that is the base TT kit. Then I’ll look at other options if necessary. Because why not? There’s nothing to lose.

@OVTune what are your thought on the need/desire to regear with your current setup. Are you still on 265/75r16 and stock gearing for the TT testing?

I don't have a solid opinion on gears vs no gears. It just depends on the situation.
with stock gears and the base kit, sure you can maintain speed in 6th, accelerate in 6th, climb moderate hills in 6th.
BUT to do that you have to be generating some boost, so your MPG will see quite a hit.

you may not have to be in boost to do this with gears. So your MPG may take less of a hit.

Now general flat, or mostly flat land cruising in 6th, I highly highly doubt you'll need gears. just a tiny bit of boost literally transforms how this truck reacts at those low RPMs. In stock form the truck literally feels starved of air at those low RPM, and 1-2psi it's breathing.

gears or not the best part is that you don't have to floor it to get the boost you need. You can still maintain cruise like driving while also making some boost.

I agree. The TT kit will provide a big "boost" :amen: in low end torque (not to mention HP) which will solve many problems that many look re-gearing to solve. IMO the problem is that the 3.5L 2GR-FKS is significantly underpowered with too little torque for this truck and less a gearing problem.

Essentially re-gearing allows the engine to apply a greater torque but "work" at a slower rate. Re-gearing adds more leverage/torque to engine without changing the horsepower (HP = torque x RPM). However, this sacrifices amount distance traveled by vehicle (wheel hub rotates less (less RPM), and therefore less distance traveled). Manufacturers usually gear the vehicle to operate along peak horsepower bands to maximize efficiency and how quickly the engine can do work (power = rate of work done). This ratio is altered with larger tires.

However, those looking to re-gear because their Taco has become overweight or want to more power when towing, I would bet the TT kit will reduce the "need" to re-gear. Exceptions may be those with oversize tires or want higher gear ratio to rock crawl.

Although my experience is with a MT which has 4.30 gearing compared to the AT which has 3.90. AT users may have a different opinion but I think my truck is geared correct, even with lots of armor and +33" tires.

The larger potential issue will be traction and applying this added HP and torque, especially with daily driving on wet surfaces. I wish there was a detroit True trek LSD available for the 3rd gens. which would be ideal for both on/off-road applications. Don't like the current electronic LSD and hate the idea of using lockers on payment even in wet conditions.

My truck, MT, 4.88 would define insane with TTs. IMO. 5.29 would be too much but could climb just about anything - traction assumed.
