    Not to tangent any further.....

What I meant was the wax is replaced by a 3d printed model and a "Christmas tree" created from the 3d printed parts. The ceramic investment mold material is poured around these, dried/cured, and then put in an oven for the burnout. The resulting ceramic mold can then be poured into without the intermediate wax molding/burnout step. It makes it so a single pour can easily produce one-off custom pieces at a reasonable price.

This is the resin my buddy is currently using: https://formlabs.com/materials/jewelry/#castable-wax

Bottom line is, technology is fucking cool.

I've been on the catless dumps for over 10,000 miles with no issues/CELs. And im in a smog exempt county so either way, whatever you decide on, Mat

I’m good for either, although I have a catless ypipe going on but hopefully if the downpipes are catless I won’t be too loud since I would be fully catless. Who am I kidding, I’ve been down this road before, it’s gonna stupid loud.

If I'm not mistaken they 3D print it in wax.

    Technology is very cool.
    3D scanning almost sci Fi..

Just wait until 3D printed metal with lasers becomes cheap.

Vent mount is coming along. Changed design and will fit in both driver's side vents now.

Sorry Mat, gotta put on my engineer hat for a second:

Usually, an investment casting outfit would 3D print prototype wax patterns to prove out the process like tree and sprue design (for proper metal flow), but for full-rate production, they would machine high-precision wax pattern dies to get that nice surface finish for aero (external) or flow (internal) surfaces. If they are 3D printing the wax patterns for every run like they are in the picture from the previous post (#7644), the internal surface finish is going to be rather rough, which looks like FDM judging by the striations on the outer surfaces (and thus, inner surfaces). The rough surface finish is going to disrupt flow and be prone to fatigue cracks. Also, the very small fillet radius between the the pipe and flange is almost certainly going to crack due to fatigue at elevated temperatures with the relative motion that they will see. I understand the need for bolt head clearance, but such a sharp transition is going to be murder on high-cycle fatigue strength. I'd be interested to see how these hold up in the long term, to see if you end up having cracking issues at the flanges. I don't mean to be overly critical, just calling it as I see it. Without knowing the loads going into these parts, I can't say it is a bad detail, but from experience, even with non-critically loaded castings, the sharp transition would raise eyebrows.

ETA: A potential solution for the rough surface finish is to use SLA instead of FDM for the wax patterns. If they don't have an SLA machine, it would cost more to sub it out to someone, but the end product in metal would be much cleaner.
