Only if you can open the ducts during idle and close them during movement. You want to create air turbulence in the engine bay so air gets everywhere. With ducts, you may end up streamlining some of the cold air right out.

Look on the bright side: By the time we get the kits it'll be warm enough that the install won't be miserable.

yeah i just started doing research. the aerodynamics are interesting. depending on placement of the louvers, air could actually be pushed into the engine doing the opposite of it's intended purpose. whether or not that creates back pressure in the engine compartment re: the radiator would maybe need a real world test given there is a fan. :notsure:

I saw a post without a real reference, but it was said that Toyota studied making the Skewp functional. They didn't because it negatively impacted cooling or something?

Of course, I did lop the back section of my Skewp off to help with stuff splashing up on the windshield. Slush, car wash soap that pooled inside, etc.

in the end, I guess this was a good thought experiment, but I'll just leave it as is.

Yup. Always fun to think about.

NACA ducts always look cool. It was said that they aren't as efficient as they look though.

A big advantage with NACA ducts is they don't create drag or get ice accumulation on aircraft like a more conventional design would.

The problem with a functional scoop on these trucks is the aerodynamics of the front of the truck. That big flat grill pushes air way up and over the hood, to somewhere on the windshield... once you reach speeds where it would be beneficial. With my scoop water drops around it hardly move, if at all, even at highway speeds. Hence there isn't and never will be a "functional" scoop for these trucks

Yep. I have fun watching the water on the hood. Or, seeing the stuff near the cowl freeze with speed.

I do get some movement at lower speeds though, which is what caused me to mod it.

I saw an interview somewhere on Youtube with a Toyota engineer talking about that. He said their engine bay temps are low compared to most other trucks, which is why they work so well in hot climates. And that a functional hood scoop would change the air flow (e.g. with turbulence) and mess that up.

A scoop could be functional if placed toward the front of the hood, like on the tundra. But as mentioned the drawbacks would probably outweigh any benefit

Yep. I am pretty indifferent about it and have thought of swapping. The 2nd Gen design is nicer in my opinion.

Haha! I wasn't talking about the entire truck. The common stuff between the gens, the hood, and taillights are about it. Otherwise, I like the 3rd Gen better. I'm thankful for the tune to add the missing torque.

Lol that makes sense then. Definitely with you on the hood and taillights. I don't care for the front end though, that was a huge improvement in the 3rd iteration imo

Agreed. And, the 2nd Gen bed side 'flares' were weird.

so this is exactly why i was thinking of doing this so that is cool to hear about low temps. I'm in Baja a lot and depending on season temps can 110-ish. I'm going to tape some yarn to the hood for sh&ts and giggles. and while i have a sport in name only. the hood is from OR
