I’m having an issue with my Speedo not working. Same code Speed Sensor ‘A’

I replaced my ABS Control module and that’s when it started messing up. Worked fine for 4KM then went off and on. Drove it home without a speedo. Got in it the next day worked for a bit then started jumping around. Then continued to work until yesterday when I put it in 4wd even resetting the codes haven’t been able to get it to work. Any ideas? Everything worked fine before the ABS CM replacement. Didn’t touch anything besides for unhooking the wiring harness and the brake lines. Exact same part number as the one I took out.

Any information on this will be fantastic

I'll bump this older thread with my issue and hope to find a cure. brake/abs light has been on for a while, now cel (P0500) and no speedo/odometer. I did find the right rear abs wire wasn't connected, I repaired but still no speedo. Both rear speed sensors have resistance. I too would rather not start throwing speedo cluster or ecu's at the truck until I can truly diag what the problem is.

So now after the repair the ONLY issue is no speedo?

The ABS control module control the speedo. I’d take it to a dealer and get them to reprogram your abs control module

Upon further investigation I found another broken wire for the left front speed sensor. Repaired it and speedo works, mil is off, abs is off and brake is off. wohoo. For the left sensor I have one of the wires to the sensor run thru a switch on the dash to disable abs on the go for off-roading. One of my connectors came apart.

Doesn’t that just make it so ABS still works on the other 3 wheels

Once the ABS light is on the ABS is disabled. (In my case). You don't know how many times I've "almost died" because I forgot to disable ABS off-roading and coming into the first turn with no brakes!

Do you happen to have a write up of the switch? I've tried looking for one for the 05's and always come up short. I would really like to have the ABS on a button. I almost rear ended a couple people coming down hill on some trails because the truck just wouldn't stop due to the ABS.

Here is a long thread about it. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...mas-w-o-vsc-locking-diff-write-up-pics.77649/
Mine was simple. There are 2 wires going to the LF abs sensor. I cut 1 wire, connected each end of the cut wire to a longer wire and into the cab, After mounting a simple on/off switch (on for on road-circuit connected, off for off-road-circuit not connected), I connected the wires to the appropriate pole.

My '06 is at the local Toyota dealer right now with the CEL on and showing a P0500. Speedo works, cruise control works. The light has been on for months and I've had two Toyota dealers check it. It was intermittent for a month or so and then stayed on but the truck drove fine. I took it in for routine maint and mentioned it. They said it also showed a bad air injector pump and replaced that for about $1400. Then a few days later the CEL came on again showing the P0500 code so they must not have even checked that out but it was shown on the ticket. If they want to replace the instrument cluster I'm going to tell them to forget it. I'll just mount an ultragauge and maybe it can clear the codes or at least tell me if a new error code is showing since the CEL will always be on.

Tanin Auto has clusters. They have a few options. You can send them yours and they fix it or you can straight up buy one that has already been fixed. They even put your mileage and VIN on it. So you just remove the old and install the new. I have not done it yet but I am ready to place the order. here is the link if you are interested. https://www.taninautoelectronix.com/product/2005-2011-toyota-tacoma-instrument-cluster/

Thanks, Lolly. I'll keep that in mind. They just called and said they have ordered two speed sensors and will call again tomorrow after they install and test. I don't think that's going to fix it but we'll see.

Yikes! Those little buggers are about $200 each for OEM.

Installed both new speed sensors and the CEL light came on again. Replace instrument cluster next?

Speed sensor A is located in the cluster housing i had the same code. I replaced the cluster and cleared the CEL light about 2 months ago and no more issues.

After the Toyota dealership replaced two speed sensors and did not fix the problem with the CEL coming back on, they replaced the cluster ($430), credited me the sensors and the light has stayed off for two weeks now. My Ultragauge says I'll still have to drive it for a while before it is ready for the emissions test.

I finally got the dreaded P0500 Code after 15 years of hard use of my 2005 TRD OR DC 4.0 L

ABS and Brake lights are on.

The strange thing is when I step on the brakes, the VSC Off, VSC TRAC, and and Downhill Assist lights up.

When I release the brake, the lights come off except for the Brake and ABS lights.

AC, blower, and power windows do not work.

    Radio works fine.

I checked the charging system and the alternator was undercharging, so replaced it and the dead battery.

The dash lights are still on.

    What next?
