The truck only has 78000 miles on it.Both body shops said it was a defective paint job not how it was stored..One said he would take my money but I should talk to Toyota first. Gcarolino on here also has the same problem The paint on the rest of the truck is fine only the roof

The roof has the most direct sunlight exposure, so the roof is generally the first place paint fails or the hood/trunk, or combination thereof.

What was the reason given by your painter that was clearly a defect in the original paint?

Mileage of vehicle will not matter as majority of vehicles spend entire life parked outside in the elements

I got 2 fenders and the roof painted for $400 sounds like you're going to the wrong shops. I don't park my truck inside a garage so I can't really complain, I've seen this happen to many dark tacomas. The truck is almost 9 years old, the paint is eventually going to go

Except every senior citizens vehicle with 1500/annually and garage kept, which is why I asked the question in the first place.

By the looks of all the stuff in his bed, the truck is kept outside all the time. Just replace the paint if it bugs you so much and call it a day.

Again it is just the roof the rest of the paint is fine.If anything I could see the hood because of all the heat from the engine compartment. It appears that when it was painted they did not clean the surface properly it is down to bare metal in spots !!!!!

How old is your truck Murray? And again, your painter said it was defective paint from the factory. What was the defect he pointed out? He obviously spotted evidence.

Only a waste of time if your mind is already made up, and it appears to be so. We can talk paint, walk you through repairing yourself and how to prevent. Or we can play the blame game and be nonsensical.

What was the paint defect? How old is your truck?

What care was done to the paint? Expect your new paint job to fail too if you don't properly wash and wax/seal the paint.

I have the exact same problem with my 2005 toyota tacoma. It is also blue. The roof has peeling paint, rust and the weird scratches...did you find out what caused it? Was it an easy fix? Im thinking is might be a manufacturer issue.

Why do you think it's a manufacturing issue?

Everybody who needs a paint job always wants to blame the manufacturer, maybe so it's a free fix?

Paint isn't forever. Not every paint job from Toyota is defective. ;)

However...I did not come on here to play the blame game as you suggest. I am here to find a solution from others who have experienced the same issue and how they resolved it in the most cost effective way...

Bump for this post. I have a 2012 (purchased new in March of 2012). Truck has 53K miles and the side of the bed has many faded spots (looks like clear coat is gone on those spots). When I first got it, within a couple of months I had one spot in front panel near the engine.
