In the 09s there isn't really a flat surface. Even w/o the sub the middle cubby is raised so you don't have a flat area compared to the 08s. Check this guys out:

He uses a protective cargo tray you can see how much room the 08s had with the seats folded forward and how limited the 09s are. Do a search here or on Toyota Nation and you can see the differences.
