I wanted to paint the outside of my grille the chrome part into white, so I need a certain kind of spray paint and do I need to sand it or can I just got at it? Anyone advice would be awesome, this is the only picture I have lol but the yota (obviously) but the outer part of the grille!

sand it, primer it and paint and you should be fine. I did mine on an 06 and it still looked good when I sold it a few years ago.

    Do no prep..&Plastidip.
Then if you don't like it..or sell it...
Peel and it'll be preserved oem grill.
There's even a thread with pictures.. on how the white plastidip matches the tacoma white.

Or prep it right (have a nice clean spray area) and use adhesive promoter.. prime..paint and clearcoat..maybe even wetsanding and wax..
id research and find one of the many tacomaworld write ups on prepping and painting grills. Read through a few of those and take out what's going to work best in your situation. Then post lots of pictures of your sweet new grill..

I painted mine BSP to match the rest of the truck. My budy owns a body shop, so it was a breeze. Take your time and it'll come out great.

I would go with the plastidip first and see if it is what you want, then later if it is paint it.

I'm not bashing anyone who plastidips but I would not plastidip all though many do because it''s the easiest and cost the least. It has no UV protection so after awhile your black will start to fade. Try peeling that plastidip off after it's been on for a while (good luck). Ask those who have plastidip to show how easy it was to remove when you decide to change. I have repainted many parts that have been plastidip but only after I have machine blasted or mechanically removed it. If your looking for cost saving and Rust-Oleum will fade over time as well, it would be a better choice because to reapply all you would need to do is sand and repaint. As for me I will sand my TRD grill with a fine sandpaper, apply an addhesion promoter and paint with single stage polyurethane paint. It's durable and will outlast all of the above and look the best. Cost more and takes more equipment and tools but for me it's the only option. I have been a auto and aircraft painter for over 40 yrs. $.02

    Facts vs fiction.
    Glossifier HAS uv protection.
I have removed 1&2 year old plastidip without use of whatever machine you "had" to use.
I put alot of coats on and it always comes off on one large sheet.
Plastidip is not like any paint either of us come across in our professional painting careers. As with many paint products..
Using it properly will yield great results.
    Plastidip haters are funny.

How many grilles you seen that are GLOSS. You are correct in using a Glossifier with UV but how many use it? Painting on a smooth surface with enough mils have a greater chance of coming off but parts that have a lot of nooks will not come off in sheets. If you go the full plastidip system it works but aerosol can? Ah C'mon. Talk to true painters and they all laugh at plastidip on a 35k truck, just saying. If you love plastidip I respect your choice.$.02

Color matched grills in plastidip would not match without the glossifier.
For blacked out grills they make glossifier in a matte.
    Glossifier is aerosol.
Topcoat is plastidip clear coat for sprayers.

Is it relevant the number of people who don't follow instructions and don't use glossifier or a topcoat..? How many people don't prime when they should? Is the paint product worse because of that?

As far as how well it comes off...
Real world experience has shown me it comes off small nooks and crevasses as long as it was sprayed correctly.
Thin layer of plastidip will come off hard.
But they sell. Plastidip remover and WD40 works too.

I agree with the application process that very few follow is the reason it gets a bad rap. Done correctly you are right, I just happen to fix a lot who don't.

Find someone with a white surround that would like to have chrome.

Regardless of the current trend of black wheels, monochromatic trim and general chrome hate, not everyone plays at trendy parties.

The same shit everyone else has.
Strip the "chrome" with oven cleaner and red Scotchbrite. Then prime it and block it out, then wet sand. Then paint. Then clearcoat. Then wetsand. Then cut/buff/wax.

This thread is a bit bemusing for me, as just about the first "mod" I did on my recently new-to-me '09 Super White DCSB TRDS SR5 was to replace the "color-matched" grill surround with a chromed assembly. To me (I'm old) the white surround did not look even a little bit truck like, in fact it made it look the front end of my wife's Highlander (likely a contributing factor).

The good news is I sold the white grill for a bit more than I paid for the chrome one so it cost me nothing...

Painting chrome coating should be treated the same as if you would be painting a piece of metal. One should clean it with wax and grease remover, etch it, prime it sand it and the top coat it with the color you want. This will ensure the adhesion to the chrome. We have done this in our shop and haven't had any problems with it peeling.

Im with you 100% on this one. I went as far as to buy a spare grille, turn it in to a Satoshi style grille and color match it. I ran it for a month or so then went back to the stock chrome grille because I like it better.
