I think I'm going to paint my truck. The clear coat in peeling all over the whole truck and it pisses me off. I have no real painting experience, but I'm just joining for it. I plan on buying one cheaper sprayer for paint and a nicer one for clear coat. Do I need to sand down to the filler or can I just sand the paint pretty good? Is primer necessary? My truck is green now painting it to white. Help

Ever since I got my 99 I've noticed a lot of 1st gens with peeling clear coats. And fading paint on hoods and roof of truck. Mine is peeling bad on the hood fender and top also. Wonder what the issue was with the paint on these

You need to remove anything that's peeling you don't need to fo go metal. If you paint on top of peeling material the new will peel along with the old.

A good paint job is only as good as the body prep work.....

This. It's all in the prep work. Sanding, sanding, and more sanding.

It's a lot of work man. I tried painting my truck toolbox according to how it would be done properly auto-body wise and it took me a week.

    Nothing.

They are old, have sat outside, and been generally unloved in terms of washing and waxing.

Plenty of online reading to do on the topic.

You need to be very patient. Done right, you can paint a vehicle with a roller and Rustoleum and have it look pretty good at 3-4 feet, maybe even 2 feet. Google $50 dollar paint job.

If you are into off road, refinishing the truck with a premium bedliner is a consideration. www.monstaliner.com is a product that is available in a wide range of colors, doesn't have that annoying rough textured surface (no rubber particulate in it) and can be sprayed or rolled.

However, even with that, prep is the key.

You don't have to go to bare metal, but all the clear has to come off the panels that are peeling.

Tech tip: You are going to need way more tools than 2 spray guns. And if you are still thinking paint basecoat/clearcoat, you need to call a price that stuff from a vendor. It ain't cheap.

    OME and worth every penny.
If you're willing to do a LOT of sanding. You can make just about any paint job look good. Not a fan of liners unless it's just an offroad vehicle. i.e. deer lease. I'm in the same spot though, my clear has failed, not looking forward to the sanding.

No real issue with the paint used,,just years of hot and cold cycles since 1999. Had some clear peel off this past winter for the first time due to the unusual amount of snow and cold we had,,but it is old weathered clear and was to be expected somewhat. Very surprised that it lasted this long. Keep the Turtle Wax applied and you get a few more before it happens. It doesn't last forever depending on where you live,,or it lived for a time. Tape off the peeled spots and go to work,,or strip and repaint and then clear the entire section if you want it to look even and not blotchy fixes.

My 2002 is white and the paint/clear coat has held up fine even with heavy oxidation at times from lack of proper care (not any more though).

IMO, it's the paint. Seems like any color (even on other makes) other than white is likely to have issues. Especially those forest green vehicles. Just the other day I snapped this pic of this blue 2nd gen

Just look at that sad truck. I would be pissed.

I would keep the color the same, that way you don't have to worry a out door jam's and such. You could even just paint the roof and the hood if you can get the paint to match, then clay bar/polish/wax the panels that aren't peeling. It'd end up looking maybe 90% as good as a legit paint job, with much lower cost and effort, and way better than the average 1st gen.

I'm pretty sure 1st Gen white doesn't have a clear coat. I know my son's '98 doesn't and an occasional buff gets it nice and shinny again.

Though when I let it go and wash it, the wash water turns white. A little polish, a little wax and she shines again....

Why would I need more than two spay guns? Or are you talking about prep work tools?

I was rear ended...they had to put a new rear panel/fender on. Just that fender has clear coming off and is fading? What would be the cost on avg just for a rear fender painting on a 04 dbl cab...sorry for jacking the thread..

Need to ensure you have a a drier on your air lines- any moisture in spray lines and you will be sanding again.

I would use a single stage color matched- much more forgiving (and more cost effective).

I still have the window sticker in the glovebox of mine, it was originally a Florida truck then wound up in south AL, now in central AL, so alot of hot hot summers. That would take a toll on any paint job i guess.. I have noticed alot of the jade/mica (green) yota's with bad paint though.

How do single stage paints hold up in the long run?
