Slayer, I just bought a 2004, and the rattle was driving me crazy, finally realized it was the empty passenger seat, I would pull and hold the head rest while driving and the rattle would stop. My quick fix was to loop the seat belt around the back of the seat and make it as tight as I could, took about 85% of the rattle away. That is just a quick fix until it cools off here in Phoenix. I hope this may help someone. I also have the automatic shifter that makes a rattle noise.
    Thanks,

What I've done to stop or at least most of the vibration was I shimmed up the side of the seat closest to the door with a thick 1/2“ washer under the two bolts. Took me 5 mins and less than .50¢. this way it's putting a bit of pressure on the center console.

Thank you for this thread. I thought I was going crazy with my passenger seat rattle. Had it since day one. Took it to the dealer today for the 1st 5k service and told the dealer about it. They didn't even test drive it. They just hit the back of the seat with their hands and compared it to other tacomas and said it was normal. I bought two new tacomas at the same time, one dose it the other does not. I filed a complaint with Corp, but I am assuming they know about this, and I am SOL.

I just shoved a small block of rigid foam between the seat bolster and the center console and it stopped it. My second Gen used to do it like crazy on the highway and I did the same thing with that truck too.

It seems too easy, but adjusting the seat to where I wanted it and then jerking it back and forward worked.

My passenger side rail wasn't engaging with the sliding mechanism on the passenger seat and had play/would rattle. Once a little force was applied, it clicked into place and is solid. Quite satisfying.

The loose seat back is part of the problem. What actually makes the noise is the headrest.

take your head rest out and it’s quiet. I haven’t decided how to fix it yet.

keeping the seat back from moving keeps the headrest from shaking.

I swapped the noisy passenger seat headrest with the driver's seat headrest. Worked great. Maybe they just fit a bit differently. Easy enough to try. Good luck.
