That was before, now anytime I need power, uphill or when accelerating quickly, the engine stutters and almost stalls.

If I can get the rotor off. On the picture (thanks!) it looks like it should just come off, no screws or bolds holding it.

That took a lot more strength than I would normally dare with a plastic part. But it's off

Did ot have a center electrode? Or is that the way it came off? It should have spring loaded carbon electrode in center.

The distributor itself actually seems to be in pretty good shape. I would still do the ohm checks described in the FSM, but when you see a bad one you can usually tell right away because it will have cracks all through that gel looking area with toyota written across it. A new cap and rotor never hurts. My hunch is that this is still an ignition issue just based on all the work you did to the fuel system already. Only thing you have left fuel side are injectors. Have you done the "screwdriver test" on the injectors to make sure they sound ok?

A distributor cap goes for $43 on Amazon, anywere cheaper?
I did buy some injector refurbish kit, and let a mechanic do it for me. What is the "screwdriver test"?

The screwdriver test is essentially just using a screwdriver a s stethoscope and listening to make sure your injectors are opening and closing and all generally sound the same. make sure you do the ohm checks that the FSM calls out for the distributor just to give you more piece of mind that it's working properly.

Thanks for the follow up. No this is the way it came off. Are you sure it looks different from the way it should be?

OK the problem definitely gets worse when the engine is hot. This morning it was rather cold for where I live (70F/20C) and going to the city I had an occasional sputter but no problems. The way back in the heat was horrible, I stalled out twenty times. And the best news is, I got a code ...*drums*... P0171!

I put a little video on Youtube, maybe it helps:

Your dist. cap is missing the center electrode. Go to a parts house and have them pull one and compare it.

What was the resistance of each sparkplug wire? May have to get a obd2 reader that will display data.
