Thinking of doing my truck in red. Does the glossifier just spray over top like a clear coat?

Getting ready to do my truck anthracite grey like yours. Did you use gun metal as the base? If so how many gallons? Also, did you use a clear on top? Dyc recommends 5 gal for a truck. Do you feel yours is plenty thick? Did you have any problems peeling the fenders?

    Sorry for the 20 questions.

I was thinking about dipping my thread truck with the matte clear to make my truck a matte red. I think it would look sick.

I used one gallon of black and three anthracite. I've been told the metallic flakes may create problems when peeling so I did the coat of black first. I sprayed about 8-10 thin coats. Thicker coats would have probably gotten a smoother look, but you have to be careful not to overdo it. 4 gallons was plenty thick. I didn't peel the existing anthracite from the flares when I dipped them black, just painted right over it. The thicker the dip is from more and more coats, the better.
There are some areas around the door handles and stuff that are coming up, but simple paint thinner will get it to lay back down. Really easy touch up process. I recommend saving some of the anthracite paint from your gallons in a sealed jar with thinner mixed in. This way you'll have a perfect color match if you need to touch up. The 'rattle can' anthracite was too light of a shade compared to the gallons I used to use as touch up paint, so I ended up using a Preval spray can (home Depot carries them) for larger touch up areas (around the fenders when I took them off). You can use a brush for smaller touch up jobs.

The preval spray can kit comes with a nifty little jar so I keep my extra paint in that.

This is why I recommend saving some of your existing gallon paint and using a Preval can for large touch up areas. See where I touched up around the fenders? That was from the "rattle can" anthracite. Too light.

I went back over it with the preval sprayer and some of my gallon paint and it was a perfect match.

Thanks! You seriously answered the questions I hadn't even asked yet. Now I just need to order my California legal dip.

You can see the full build thread here. Also, here is my thread on the DipYourCar.com forum.

The paint is called Super Red. It's created by using a base coat of gun metal gray and then a special red mix. It's a specific ratio of Real Red Tint into Real Red Paint and Real Red Pearls. It gives really great coverage, especially over the gray. I used regular black for the flares, bumpers, grill, cowl and even the windshield wipers.

Quantity was as follows. These are the pre-thinned gallons from dipyourcar.com.
    - 2 gallons gun metal gray
    - 2.1 gallons super red, (I would have been fine with 2 if I hadn't broken the gun)
    - 3/4 gallon black

I initially purchased 3 gallons gray, 3 gallons red and 2 gallons black to make sure I had enough on hand and I knew I would have future projects to put the extra paint on. You could do this project with only the 5 gallons. You could do this with only 4 if you were doing everything a single color. At roughly $55 per gallon, it's a $220-$270 project plus another $40 shipping the paint.

Here is a video of us masking and painting. I forgot to start the camera for the first coat of red, and I missed the last few coats of red due to me breaking the paint gun.

The final product looks great. The DYC dip coat made a huge difference it converting it from the soft rubber feel to more of a paint-like finish. I have two bottles of that, but we'll try the Turtle Ice Wax at some point for comparison. Regardless, it's probably worth the money for the 1st bottle after the dip.
I'm trying to dig up a list of lessons learned. I'll post them up once I find it.

With the prep and application effort involved, I'd think that something more durable, like monstaliner, might make a reasonable choice.

Of course the dip routine is easier to redo if you want a different color next year.......

Yeah, it's kind of a novelty, and the replacement ease and lower cost is the biggest consideration. Now that I've done it, I could easily do the entire truck in one day. It's a little deceiving after watching all of the plastidip videos on line for how easy they make it look. It would be much easier to dip a new car a single color vs. a truck with all of the accessories.

I think the other downside with something like monstaliner is that it's a permanent change. If that ever went bad, you'd be down to replacing body panels. I've thought it would be awesome to Linex a vehicle with their cool colors, but eventually it would need to be replaced.

The prep is not that bad, you don't have to be nearly as meticulous with where you lay the tape as long as there is an edge. For instance, the back quarter windows involve very little masking. Just slap a square of newspaper on there and you're good. Once you peel it off, any that is on the glass will go with it. Weather stripping? Same thing, just make sure the masking tape covers it somewhat so you can peel off whatever dip gets on the strip. You don't have to worry about covering up everything perfectly, except the bedliner if you have it, dip doesn't peel off of that.

Is this something you could do in your driveway or is it necessary to do in a garage?

I have been reading and watching the video's on plastic-dip and was already leaning towards it. My 96 is in horrible shape. After seeing yours I am definitely going to do this. Thanks for posting about it.

    Whole truck and rims.
