    OP ,

I made a mistake , my 80 gig didn't come with the component cables either , I was just looking through my old manual . I must have bought them seperately .

you cannot watch blu ray movies in full hd without the hdmi cord. the component only makes games work in 1080 and movies show in 480p max. so if you want the full effect of hd dont waste your money on component cables and get the hdmi working.

I think you are incorrect . Component cables are capable of 1080p , it doesn't matter if it is a game or bluray movie .

Edit : You are correct in that you will get a max resolution of 1080i for Bluray movies , but not the 480p you are stating .

( It's the last hint on this page )

Your best bet is to run the hdmi out of your sattalite reciever into the hdmi of the tele. Then run the component cables from the ps3 into the component ins of the tele as well. 2 seperate signals on 2 separate chanels. Then just switch your "source" to whichever you desire.
I was wondering if the splitter you bought was passive or active? If its passive then that may be your problem but only if you were trying to send the same signal to two seperate monitors.
Innitially it looks as if your chain of components is wrong.

alright...here's what i decided to do. called best buy, and they dont carry the ps3 component av cables. gamestop does carry them...and i found some on Amazon for cheap. but i stopped by a new walmart on way from work today, and they had an energizer component cable kit that works with the ps3. it was only $20, so i got it. im gonna leave my satellite hooked to the tv with hdmi cable, and gonna run the component cables from my ps3 to the tv and see how it looks. right now, i cant afford the actual switcher i'd need so hopefully this will work.

What happens if you switch to the PS3 with your HDMI switch and unplug the DirecTV? Does it improve the static issue by chance? Some devices have energy that back feeds, was wondering if the Directv box was causing issues. Just a thought.

what i did now.......i took the hdmi cable off the satellite receiver and hooked it up from the ps3 to the tv, and used component cables on the satellite receiver to the tv. now..that said, these are some old cables, and i can tell a bit of a difference in the picture. does anyone make some good thicker component cables with better ends? would i get a better picture with better component cables?

Your sattelite receiver outputs in 1080i max , I think , so if you noticed a degradation in picture quality over the way it was hooked up before you should get new cables.

You are using COMPONENT and not COMPOSITE right ?
