I recently installed a KC Hilites Gravity Pro 6 light bar on my Taco. Due to my impatience, and the fact that I spent almost 6 hours for two holes I needed to drill (with titanium bits mind you) for the mounting brackets, I drilled too far into the roof/A-pillar and shredded a few wires.

Yes this was my first time and I was ready to end myself for making such a stupid mistake. Anyway- after accepting my fate I repaired the wiring via butt connectors (another 3 hours) and got all the alarms to stop making my ears bleed. Truck is 100% functional and brought it to my local dealership to make sure everything is okay.

I’m an idiot and fully recognize that fact- I really need the following wire harness to replace my sloppy work and ensure longevity of my truck. It’s a specific part of a total wiring harness with a starting connection in the A-Pillar on the driver side, extends to the Crawl Control console on the roof, and then down to the A-Pillar on the passenger side. The part number on the tag is 82171-04870 (pictures attached).

I tried ordering the part through my local dealership but they said Toyota hasn’t manufactured the part yet for [repair] purchases. I want to call bullshit but due to our current COVID circumstances it may actually be true.

    TLDR;
Please help me find a wiring harness with part number 82171-04870.

    My truck:

Maybe you can get a wiring harness from a junkyard.

I’ve checked my local junk yards can’t find any 3rd Gen Tacos made in 2020/2021. Plus it’s starting to hit negative temps where I’m at

Slightly off topic, but make sure you didn't puncture the curtain airbag as well. Safety first and all.

To be honest, replacing the harness is a waste of money. Get on YouTube and learn how to repair a broken wire. A repaired wire is just as good (for this purpose) as the factory unbroken wire. There’s nothing wrong with a butt connection either.

Learn how to solder (YouTube has good tutorials and it’s about as easy as tying a knot) and fix the wires properly. You’ll forget anything happened over time and those repaired wires will outlast the lifespan of the vehicle and maybe be used on a restoration project for another generation fixing up a rusted out 3rd gen.

As long as those wires are inside the cab, you will be fine with properly crimped butt connectors. The problem with any crimp connector is when it’s outside, the elements will cause corrosion and the wire ends up breaking. That’s why it’s best to use solder and some kind of sealant/shrink tubing if the connection is outside.

A photo of the finished repair might help but I agree that I’d leave it if all is well. As mentioned, butt connectors are fine in the cab. Some zip ties might help to avoid vibrations from years of use potentially causing fatigue in an unexpected manner but if it’s properly sandwiched that’s a far cry from a pressing concern.

If you could remove it from the vehicle and send to me I could do a crimped repair with connectors and try to match color and gauge just for your own peace of mind. But that means several days without that harness at a minimum. And with that approach I have no guarantees that the connectors I use will fit where they need to fit in the space available.

I would not sweat this one if I were you. And I like to sweat the small stuff so I get it. I suspect the effort required just to remove the harness far exceeds any value in replacing it compared to an in place repair as you’ve done.

Butt splice connectors are not perfect, but they will be effective for a long time. Wiring harnesses are expensive. I would leave it until you have an issue (maybe never). You'll sell it and forget all about telling the next owner what happened! ;)

I'm kind of hung up on the drilling for the Pro6 light bar. I thought KC made brackets that bolt to the original factory roof rack holes like advertised on their website?

Props to you for owning your mistake -- we all have moments.

Solder and heat shrink will get you a long way in life, a properly soldered joint is a lifetime repair. The tools aren't very expensive and with a little practice you will have a useful skill.

I personally feel butt connectors are a "just OK" repair -- there is now a potential trouble point lurking in the system.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY and carefully inspect the air bag too.

Both techniques are great to have. I have heard a properly installed crimp connector is a lot more vibration resistant than solder. I sure hope so as I used crimps on my fuel pump connection after reading that :)
