Wife wants you to fix it so fix it.

Everyone knows what a bug sis in law is but you can't fix her.

Compliment your wife for turning out normal even though her sister did not.

I will need to see some pic of your sister in-law & wife before I can formulate an opinion..... No seriously I have the same type of sister in-law & it makes me sick always complaining how tough her life is. Nobody takes personal repsonsability for their actions anymore.

I would make her ask first but then fix it, not worth the fight & ill feelings from your wife. Let your wife know you will if she asks you, takes the pressure off of you & puts it on her.

I refuse to help anyone that has money for other shit, but no money for their resposiblities. I vote don't fix it and if your wife is adement about it getting fixed, then let her pay for it from her earned kept money and she can keep up with getting paid back from her family. My wife's aunt asked us for $300.00 and I said, take it from your account (she sells jewelry on the side) and you deal with collecting it, but you might as well kiss it goodbye, cuz your aunt is terrible and paying back but quick on asking. Funny thing, she would call and now that she owes us money, no call. But it wasn't money from our account, but still that shit irks me.

    Haha

Seriously though, unless she's doing SOMETHING to help you out in return, then i wouldn't do it.

Like yesterday, I helped one of my best buddies rip apart his quads braking system to clean out all the mud lube it all up. Can't even count the amount of times he's pulled me outta the mud or some back woods place. But thats a good buddy. I help my GF's lil sis replace the belt on her Mazda, she got me an iced cap from timmies. the lil appreciation stuff is all i ask for, I'll never help out someone ungrateful

I voted not fix it, but im an asshole lol. I hate when people beat around the bush. Now if she comes at you directly and says "please take a look at my car im afraid something is wrong" well be a "nice" guy and get the parts and fix it.... "nice" cause the parts may cost $40 but tell her they cost a grand! :D

not to thread jack but my coworker 56, has two daughters in their 30's that moved back home both after divorces (got the house out of the marriage and sold it) moved back home rent free vacation all the time drive new cars and dont pay any rent... my buddie said they bring him home a six pack every now and then  thats messed up.

I hate that passive crap. Let her come out and ask if she wants/needs your help.

Summed up beautifully in Fight Club:

Narrator: Oh, it's late. Hey, thanks for the beer.
    Tyler Durden: Yeah, man.
Narrator: I should find a hotel.
    Tyler Durden: [in disbelief] What?
    Narrator: What?
    Tyler Durden: A hotel?
    Narrator: Yeah.
    Tyler Durden: Just ask, man.
Narrator: What are you talking about?
Tyler Durden: [laughs] Three pitchers of beer, and you still can't ask.
    Narrator: What?
Tyler Durden: You call me because you need a place to stay.
Narrator: Oh, hey, no, no, no, I didn't mean...
Tyler Durden: Yes, you did. So just ask. Cut the foreplay and just ask.
Narrator: Would - would that be a problem?
Tyler Durden: Is it a problem for you to ask?
Narrator: Can I stay at your place?
    Tyler Durden: Yeah.

I would compromise with the wife by telling her you will offer the help the first time, but no more.

This is a whole different lesson but never loan money to family and expect to get it back. If you give money to a family member it's a gift-not a loan.

depends on the situation, I've gone through a couple family loans, always ended up well for me. Parents, brother, I've both borrow from and loaned too. Depends on the situation.

My brothers kinda blank about mechanical stuff, so I help him with his car, he fixes my computers. We have a system.

Don't fix it unless she asks you nicely to fix it, and tell your wife those are your conditions. and stick to it!

I think you should fix it. Im always grateful when my husband does stuff for my family, and yes, he usually gets rewarded  And if she is as bad as you say, she'll get whats coming to her, they always do.
