There is another option based on a ploy you may have seen your wife use in certain situations.

Absolutely agree to fix the car but go out of your way to mess it up while appearing to make a valiant attempt to repair it. Claim something like "I know my Toyotas but I've never worked on a (insert brand here) - modern cars are so complicated you really need a specialist for this problem - we could spend a fortune swapping out parts otherwise". If you are able to do something as part of your "tinkering" which means it needs to be towed to a dealer/mechanic, even better.

This way, you'll have shown willing, admitted a supposed failing (always goes down well) and pretty much guaranteed you won't be asked again.

No offense taken as I do not know you and you do not know me. Your opinion is based upon your view of the world which does not include me.

I was surprised to see the poll voting results so far. (Don't fix it is winning pretty handily at the moment)

Not sure you should be allowed to vote if you're not married. ;-)

I'm married and I voted DO NOT fix it.

Someone on this thread said "Pick your fights and this is not one you want." I totally disagree! I have a similar situ w/ my wife's youngest brother. Fortunately, after some tough disagreements, I have opened her eyes to his "uselessness" and "waste of air". She now understands my pure and total disgust for him. She'd even be alright if I up and kicked his ass just for the hell of it. She knows he deserves it for what he is doing to his/her parents.

I say grow a pair...stand on your principles. Show your wife your love for her. Ask her to stand in your shoes and see the situ from an objective point of view. That's what turned the tide for me. I'm sure there is no way your wife can argue for your sister...UNLESS SHE IS THE SAME WAY.

I voted done fix it, wait for the sister to ask and offer to pay you for it.. if she doesnt, you dont. if she asks and offers to pay, its up to you to either say its not necessary to pay or accept the money. Your wife should understand and support your principals imo

Tell her to schedule an appoinment with you. Find everything wrong you can with the car. Tell her it's too dangerous to drive. Since she has so much money and blows it every where, she can go buy a brand new one. You took a look at it, didn't have to fix it, and she gets a new car. Every one is happy. Problem solved. You're welcome.

Just tell her to ask next time. And she owes you..... you want a deal on education for ur kids. I know up here if your family works at a educational institution you get a break on tuition.

    Good luck

I try not to say much in these forums, but this topic just sucked me in. :D

I will NOT do it. If your sister-in-law can't ask her brother-in-law for a simple favour, there are under lying issues. If you bend over and fix it, she will blame you for everything else that goes wrong with her car for as long as she owns it.

Hold your ground and your pride, till she asks. I'd rather do some charitable work at a soup kitchen. Your wife will respect you, for being a man.

Women hate pussies, except theirs of course.

Pop the hood and when she's not looking, disconnect the negative off the battery and wrap it in tape.

Damn, car wont start. Tow it to a shop.

Man, my initial thought was f her, but since your wife is this pissed... you might wanna just tell your wife, fine, I will do it but just for your sake.

Don't spend any money on the part though, make that leech buy everything, hell, tell her the part cost a little more than it really did. :D

This is a 2 way street. Wife keeping husband happy = husband keeping wife happy = both being happy & winning. Lopsided relationships only cultivate nonsense.

Again, if she has money for all that extravigance then she can pay to have her car fixed. OP doing it is only enabling her unrealistic prioritization of her own responsibilities. Like everyone doesn't want to spend money on fun and toys instead of paying their way in life and being responsible for maintaining their own dwelling, bills, cars, self, etc...........

She finally asked and I looked at it this afternoon. Found an open in the heater circut on the primary o2 sensor. Just a little bit of time working out the seized sensor and all is well. Parts totaled $181 and as predicted she wanted to put it off. Told her if she put it off she could damage the cat and that would cost a whole lot more. Seeing it my way she reluctantly told me to fix it.
