Start the process of turning that thing into a wheeler. Or put the plates from your other truck on it and just drive it...

Yeah, I highly doubt credit score is even considered if he was scamming people. That being said, he should double down and report the truck stolen. YOLO!!

Did OP say this was done across state lines? Would that escalate things?

I'm surprised this has gone on this long. He should have contacted the FBI soon as he found out the title was garbage. I sure hope he has a contract

So who should he contact? Dear Abby. Dr. Phil, Dave Ramsey?

He should contact the authorities of some sort. The worst case scenario if he contacted the FBI is they would have referred him to the proper authorities.

A lot of bad advice in this thread.

    Remove VINs NOPE
    Part out NOPE
    Wheel it NOPE

Someone else has legal ownership and I wouldn't invite myself to an assache.

This is a pretty situation. But unfortunately you’re pretty much screwed. The police have to launch an investigation, which I’m sure they already have. It has been and can be a few month (more) before you even hear anything back. I highly doubt it’s going to the FBI unless he’s pulled this scam multiple times before and they uncover a lot more cases and evidence. That being said it Will probably be forwarded to the state police for investigation. Since it’s out of state the other states police will have to launch an investigation. Which will only increase the time it’s going to take to get to the bottom of this. If the loan company has some reason to go after him for some type fraud, that could help speed up the process. However the details you gave were pretty vague and I didn’t have a clear understanding of what exactly was going on.

The only advice you should really be seeking is from a lawyer. Not help from people on a forum. I wouldn’t touch the truck or do anything with it until you have a title saying your the legal owner. Just keep it locked up. If the police are telling you to wait just wait, as hard as it might be. Seriously though, I would consult with an attorney to see what all your options are and chances you’re not going to be screwed out of your money. However their is a good chance that might be the case. Hopefully justice will prevail.

I’ll bet a cookie that there are hidden VIN’s on the truck, a buddy of mine was a state cop and his job for awhile was checking VIN numbers on cars when the DMV found an issue.

You should also send the seller a demand letter via certified mail demanding the return or you funds for the truck. Note in the demand letter the transaction was fraudulent and you are pursuing felony theft charges. Conduct any face to fact transactions with the subject at the local police department. Report the fraud to the police department where the purchase occurred. It is not a civil matter as the seller provided a fake title to you, file charges for felony theft. If you are lucky the seller will try to offer you your money back and take the truck in order to drop charges. Lastly, I would contact the lender who holds the title and offer to purchase the truck. They would likely be willing to sell to you for a discounted price as they would have to go through legal process, repossession and auction fees to sell it. They can reissue the title to you
