Glad your wife was OK. I agree that weight and height can play a factor especially height. My wife has a 2015 Lexus 2 door coupe.
It has every airbag and safety feature known to man. But it sits very low to the ground. All those airbags, safety features as well as that front crumple zone probably won't be very effective if something high goes over them and catches the car up at hood or or A pillar level.

Washington state has some good number laws regarding the maximum distance they can be off the ground. IIRC for cars and SUV's its 22". Guys with big lifts would always complain because they would get repair orders or tickets about it but it makes sense after you look at the pictures the LOE's provide that show the result of a truck lifted to the sky and a sedan having the roof cleaved off.

It's almost as if cars are now built to take more of the impact while leaving the passenger compartment in tact as much as possible.

Sorry your friend got into an accident. I’ll be hitting up the Mercedes dealer first thing in the morning. Thanks for the heads up.

Were you looking to buy a new Mercedes or any other new car?

I thought so. :D I think I'm OK in my Tacoma also. I think most modern cars, trucks and SUV's would have performed similar given the same size.
