    More photos,
Got the shell installed. Took the guys about 30 minutes thanks to having the truck pre-wired.

I've already paid for one for the 3rd brake light on my cap but it was a very humid evening last night and that got me thinking: could a third wire be tapped to the constant/hot wire and used to power an aftermarket rear defroster. I quick search seemed to indicate they would draw between 10-20a and the first chart I came across appeared to indicate that it might be possible to draw that much current from the 7pin connector. Before I get any further down the rabbit hole I wanted to ask more knowledgeable folks about the feasibility of it.

Worst case, I run a dedicated hot wire and use the mirror defroster switch to trigger a relay for the aftermarket defroster.

I know the 7 pin can be configured to provide a hot, but there is something that has to be jumped and a chicken has to be sacrificed or something... I have my topper pre wired for a defroster. I used 12 gauge for it. The amperage draw isn't terribly high. but it's the distance that drives the gauge for me. The defrost controller is in the cab for me though, so that 12g wire is just the + side of the defrost. I think most defrosters are in that 15-20A range, so you might be okay.

Links to defroster? Just stick on the rear window? What about the front?

we sometimes get down into the 60’s here…

Using the mirror defroster / bacon switch sounds brilliant. I wonder if we can tap that guy somewhere.

@Khoadattran take note. Though this is in cab (easy access) vs at the hitch (more work to tap). You can jump it to have always hot to the 7 pin and suck juice from behind, or at least that’s how I understand it.

They sale topper kits, but since the leer XQ has a pretty short window, I ended up just getting a custom kit.
Truck Cap and Topper Defrosters – Frost Fighter & Clear View
The one thing about the defroster kits is they come with a controller that modulates the power as well as acts like a timer. So the defroster turns off after 10 minutes. And I only plan on doing the rear window of the topper as the front side of it rarely gets frosted up, even way down into the 50's!
