I see only one tap so you'd only have turns on one side right? Or you'd have to buy two of these which might hurt cost-wise?

Yeah. Cost-prohibitive to buy one kit for a taillight connector, let alone 2. I'm not hurting for it, just running off my trailer plug as it is. Might keep it that way for simplicity's sake.

I think they are 090II connectors so one option you could consider is de-pin and re-pin and we send you some 090II 6 position connectors and color-matched jumpers with double-crimps for the taps you want?

    It'd look like this

    1. take a photo of the connector and color positions
    2. de-pin oem connector and place into replacement 6 position
    3. add jumpers to mating replacement 6 position in color-matched spots
    4. pin ends of jumpers to oem connector in the correct spots as before

Now you have effectively a plug and play T harness, just you're stuck with it unless you want to repeat things in reverse order. At least it's cheap and no-cut.

de-pinning those unsealed connectors is not very hard at all.

Pretty sure I have those connectors, Dave. At least I can confirm it on my T4R. Look the same as the factory 120V outlet.

Are these still available for a 3rd gen? Just looking for brake lights.

one stupid question... this is likely pretty obvious, but after looking through this entire thread, i'm just confirming this tap goes behind the tail light? Assume it doesn't matter which one?

EDIT: found a used on locally. thanks

Hey everyone.... I even hate asking the question as I should probably know.

I hooked up a 3rd break light today using a @Puppypunter adapter (nice)... and tested as I went. I have it going to a waterproof disconnect so i can take it off if needed.

All worked great.... drove to a meeting. came out 3 hours later... all good. Went to the gas station... left the radio on while pumping gas...

And when i went to start the truck (2021 TRD Pro - new battery), it wouldn't start.

I have one of those portable jump starters that worked great... so got home. BUT...

My long-winded question is... if there is a short somewhere between the two wires... would that cause my battery to drain? I think yes... just asking.

To answer your question, there are exactly 3 wires on a 3rd gen brake tap. Parking light, brake and ground. Your brake light is only on if you press the pedal. While you aren't in the vehicle, unless you left a rock or cinder block on the brake pedal, the brake lights are off.

Parking lights are another story. You did not mention if you left them on while pumping gas.

However, the radio is likely to drain the battery just as much as the parking lights would.

Sounds just like you got a lemon battery and/or used it hard. Since you're a '21 and a pro, hit up the dealer for a warranty replacement?

First off... thanks for the quick reply.

I am only using Brake... so two wires. So i guess what you are saying is that there couldn't be a constant short because I'm not always pushing the brake..... makes sense even to me :)

Just seemed not a coincidence that it happened within hours of wiring it. Otherwise... has been perfect.

My lights were on (set on auto)... so there was a draw there for sure... but should have only been for less than 10 minutes.

I think @daveeasa explained it pretty well. There is a very small chance that a crossed wire could complete a circuit like this and not blow the fuse first, but that is a very small chance. If it does it again, you can try unplugging the brake tap and see if the problem goes away. I suspect it won't, but the process of elimination is one of the best ways to troubleshoot.

I do still make these. I saw your PM, but figured I would let everyone else know I am still alive :) If I don't respond here, by all means, shoot me a message and I'll get back to you.

New taps came with blue and white/black wire. I’m sure it’s just process if elimination but which one would you connect to a universal third brake light if the wires for that comes with a black and red?

Blue is OEM brake positive, white with black is Toyota for ground aka negative.

i.e. Blue to red, black to white w black stripe.

I'm about to drill, what would be your choice on this? I foolishly forgot to bring the flange with me but going to make the pilot hole right now and I want to get it centered. I'll look up flange dimensions.

ETA: Looks like 2.2 x 1.4 for the 6 pin flange. So call it 1.5" tall and center my hole on that vertical axis?

Top would probably be better, I would take it apart but I am away for work. Fishing wire may be interesting based on the screenshot from a taillight installation video.
