    A random orbit polisher doesn't create enough heat to burn through clear coat.

    It shouldn’t, but the OP said he was using a “polishing/cutting pad” so who knows.

    I know my Makita buffer will take the paint clean off if I have a cutting pad, high rpm, and gritty compound, but I’d never use anything more than a soft finishing pad on these trucks.

    Yup that’s my mistake. Using too harsh of a pad. Oh well. Live and learn I guess.

    Quite a few things at this point..
    Oof, no good. But should be fixable! Go ask a body shop what they can do and would do, then decide if you wanna do that or have them.

    I'm still trying to figure out if it is that large scratch or if it is that spot below the "V6" badge which is where the damage appears to be? OP?

    The scratch just appeared one day, I’m not sure how. So I fixed it via paint correction/polishing, which did get the scratch out. But the result seemed to be the spot in the last pic. Used a random orbital DA polished and a cutting pad, didn’t think it would burn, but it did. Funny thing is, the burn mark isn’t really even near the scratch.

    Ahh I see. That is really weird. Okay so rubbing compound won't work for sure.

    I agree it does look like the clear got burnt through, though without being sure and having a good way to test it I can't say if it is or is not from pictures alone.

    A random orbital DA polisher with a cutting pad most definitely can burn through clearcoat. Been there, done that. Now your big choice is what to do about it. In my case after living with the burn for a few months, I hardly noticed it and no further damage occurred. Kept the truck for five years after the oops.

    Yeah honestly I’m not gonna sell it anytime soon so I’ll just live with it. It’s barely noticeable and after the sideswipe a few months ago (was fixed nicely too) little blemishes don’t really bother me anymore. I still keep the paint in very good condition, and the truck is a 9/10 still. I try to keep it in great condition.
