Shifter getting stuck in 5th and 6th was a bit of an annoyance, once the TSB was imported to Canada was fixed quickly.

I DO have the diff howl but I haven't seen any real fix info on this, I rarely drive at the speeds where the noise happens and have extended warranty so for now I'm just waiting for a real fix to be announced before I bring it up (and thus have the dealership spend time troubleshooting and replacing)

Other than that I love my truck!

This forum has been a bit toxic though and reading all the issues had made me check a lot and even second guess my choice (never a great feeling). After going through my logic again I came to the same conclusion, I only wanted a mid-sized truck for a number of reasons.

    Honda Ridgeline? No, just no
Nissan Frontier? while a decent truck I have a hard time putting down money for something that looks this old (and is)
GMC/Chevy twins? I'd only really consider the Diesel but the cost is a lot more here! Canadian Chevy dealerships don't seem to have deep discounts like they do in the states. Paying $4,000 extra for the Diesel pays for a lot of gas!
Toyota Tacoma? reliability, resale, manual transmission, better off-road (compared to Chevy twins and Honda at least).

No matter how I do the math I still come up with the same option so I'm happy! Time to stop worrying and start enjoying! Just towed some snowmobiles out to the cabin today in fact, bring on that Canadian winter!

I think there is only 1 maybe 2 owners who ended up having a buy back. Several have traded theirs in after conplaining about a few different things

Wish you could see who voted. Wouldn't surprise me if atleast 1 second gen troll who doesn't even have a 3rd gen decided to vote, just to stir the pot a little :stirthepot:

I am now worried about off roading in the truck. My confidence is shaken

What you'll get is anecdotal numbers, not real real. Certainly worth discussing and exploring, but doing a poll on an enthusiast forum is not going to give results representative of the outside world. #1 - tons of folks buy a Tacoma and never join TW. #2 - problems may be overrepresented since someone not otherwise inclined to join a forum would be more likely to do so when they have an issue they're trying to sort out. #3 - we can't quantify how many minor/TSB things some folks would never notice had it not been for reading about them here on TW.

Again, not dogging on you. It'll be interesting to see what you get on the poll. Just trying to add information.

Ya I know, actually mentioned that in past post. Guess i didn't really mean how I said it. TW is a terrible place to gather info like this

Metal shavings could be ok, metal chunks not so much. But I know what you mean, for very low miles I would expect less shavings. But your diff hasn't actually blown up, they just replaced it because it was making the noise and had some shavings.

No worries, it can still be fun -- I just didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea (either direction). ;) Obtaining valid survey results is tough, primarily in figuring out how to get a statistically valid sample.

I changed that part just now in the first post because that's a good point. It's going to be horribly flawed statistics, but I think it will give a better idea of the actual number of issues here on TW. Seeing 15 threads on issues feels like a lot, but a few are repeats of one issue, and that many really isn't too bad with how many members are on here that are looking for problems. Like the diff howling, it seems it isn't right, but maybe it's within tolerance; there are metal shavings in the fluid but that too is fairly normal for a new diff and may be in tolerance. If you tell the dealer there is a noise and they find shavings, they decide it's bad and replace it. But was it really bad? Maybe, maybe not. Didn't blow up, they aren't allowed to take it apart to investigate, so they are just assuming. Time will tell, but until basically every diff in the country starts to blow, I'm not going to make that call that there is a real problem seeing that as far as I can tell they all make the howl

    Reliability issues, no. Annoyances, yes.

I'm going to the dealer next week to set up a ride along with a tech for the rumble strip and diff howl.

The only thing that really nags at me is the possibility of CPS failure (I checked, mine doesn't have the stamp).

Edit: 13500 KM on the rig

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
    First 2016: Failed CPS
    Second 2016: Zero issues

Not sure how to vote. A CPS failure is not a big deal. But the dealer misdiagnosing it and tearing the engine down os.

I feel the same, cps isn't that big of a deal really, but being stranded and needing a tow really is a reliability issue. It's not a blown head or trans, but it's not a non-issue
