    Need help
I have found threads mentioning Pop and Lock for a tail gate lock and a few threads on mods. But was not able to find one specific to this product or fully address a drop in upgrade that works with the camera.

Has one with a back up camera used this and how has it been performing...?

    http://www.popandlock.net/Manual_Tailgate_Lock/Toyota_Tailgate_Lock/PL5305-48

Thank you for any thread links or info!!

Truck add-ons has a specific model for the 2009 with camera. I am interested since I may have the camper shell off and would like to secure the gate. Would appreciate any experiences with installation and functionality.

I did the $55.00 manual key lock, and it works well. Installation was less than one hour. Good instructions and pictures from the manufacturer

I recently installed the manual version for now.. I will upgrade to the electric version when I get my remote start/alarm.

Install was quick and easy especially if you read the instruction fully before hand..LOL..

I do have to agree that it feels like it is going to break all the time.. but so far so good..

Color Match appears to me a little lighter than factory. Could be just different angles of surfaces
Paint surface is rough in a couple of small areas and could use some wet sanding and a couple clear coats
    Or I might repaint it.
Have read posts complaining of paint pealing, but I have not had the problem.
Though it's only been 4 or 5 weeks.
Bought it specifically for the color match.
P&L was expected to release a PL8525, incorporating both manual keyed lock and remote locking w/ keyfob.
Apparently that's not going to happen, and more than likely would not have come in Color Matched. More on this below

Construction seems decent to me. My handle pulls crisply and stops solidly.
I don't yank the handle, I lift it.
Will it last, my Crystal Ball's out gettin' polished, I don't know.
Search the PL5300 (Non Color Matched Version) for longevity.
    Opinions seem to be mixed.

Camera Mounted without any issues and view seems the same as OEM,
Though others have said it angled up a little, giving a longer field of view,
without sacrificing the view of the bumper.

Can't really address the "Weather", as it's only been on 4 -5 weeks.
Not sure what you're lookin' for, Hot/Cold?, Rain? Have seen no effects.

Yes I'd buy it again, accepting that it's not "Top Quality", nor is it "Junk".

The one problem I've had as have others,
the mechanism tends to lock itself, when the gate is closed, not necessarily slammed.
I mounted a screw (8-32 or 10-32) into an existing (not matching) threaded hole in the inside of the handle.
1st I used a rubber band from screw to mechanism, helped but didn't last.
2nd, I got an old spring from a ball point pen and did the same. trial and error 'til it seemed to work.
Only been a week, but seems to have done the trick. I'll post some pics below (gotta upload 'em 1st)

I'm intending to adapt the PL8521 to the PL5305.
I have a cap with manual key and remote entry
I will connect the PL8521 to the same wiring with a switch to disable both.
Then both Cap and Tailgate can be manually locked. Cab doors , lock unlock with keyfob.
Hate to be sittin' at a light in the city and have someone open my tail and help themselves

Thanks, that's what I like to hear.
It's what Tacoma World's all about.

Copied & Pasted from my post above:
"The one problem I've had as have others,
the mechanism tends to lock itself, when the gate is closed, not necessarily slammed.
Only been a week, but seems to have done the trick."

The internal mechanism can move into the locked position
The spring puts a little tension on it to keep it in the "unlocked position"
To much tension will cause it to unlock all the time.
    Hense, the trial and error.
Spring broke recently (after 3-1/2 years). I stretched and reattached it.
Gonna look for a Stainless Steel spring and replace it when warmer weather returns.

Anybody installed a backup camera with this setup? I've got an older-style pop-and-lock and was thinking about putting this in:

    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_249CUB01/Crux-CUB-01.html

It would require drilling out a hole, but I'm not sure whether or not the tailgate handle space would be sufficient?

I put my camera dead center of my stock handle, I had to dremel out a quarter circle of the handle but there was plenty of room, also I have a locking cover that laps over the gate so I didn't need the pop n lock, I can't post a pick cause my wife is shopping with the truck at the moment

I've got the Pioneer camera connected to my Pioneer head unit. Since my truck didn't come with a camera I used the pop and lock handle for the later Tacomas. I had to modify it a little, easy to do with a file, to bring the camera angle up a few degrees but it's been on there for years now and no issues other than the crappy plastic Toyota clips breaking.

@Bajatacoma, any chance you'd have a picture of the Pioneer camera or a link to it on Amazon?

Anyone know if my 2008 Tacoma would have the necessary on-board wiring if I ordered an OEM or knock-off OEM camera?

    It looks like this.
    https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Accessories/Rear-View-Cameras/ND-BC8
I just looked at pop and lock's website and my handle is different from what they currently have listed. My camera is on the left side of the handle with a square opening and the lock cylinder is to the right.

I bought a popnlock that has a cutout for an OEM camera but I just glued shut the plastic pop off cover and installed a cheap $17 12v camera on the outside of the cover. I bondo'd the exposed gap plastidipped the whole handle. I bought a camera that is angled downward so I can see the edge of my steel bumper for parking. I also am running a front camera for the same purpose. Works great with my new kenwood. I found that having those cameras that point straight back is worthless for parking. You can't see your rear bumper. My front cube camera was originally used for the rear but it was worthless pointing straight back for parking.
