I bought the basic Pop and Lock (PL5100? Maybe) that comes with a set of keys about 8 years ago for my 2007.
The mechanism started to be difficult to open and just recently the key broke off inside and I haven’t been able to get it out of the lock.
I am looking at getting a new one and possibly a power lock.
I have some questions and was hoping someone could help.
Is the PL8521 a good choice if I go powered? Do I still need to buy a replacement for my old one prior to installing the PL8521?
Is there a better alternative to the 8521?
Anyone have experience with the PL5400 where you use your key and program it?
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers

I’m pretty sure you can buy a new lock assembly from pop & lock.

I have the PL5400 locking latch with the BOLT programmable system. Works perfectly -- I like the way it sets to one's ignition key on first use.

But, like all the Gen 2 latches, Pop & Lock did a bad job specifying weathering resistance in the polymer they use for injection molding the latch (for the standard slightly-textured OEM-look black one). The plastic fades and get whitish surprisingly quickly. The Pop & Lock I have on my Gen 1 looks like the OEM latch after almost ten years, so they *could* have done it. They may even claim they've fixed the problem. Show me, I say to them.

So if you're OK with the weathering issue, the BOLT codeable lock is a great system.

I have the Pop n lock that uses the Toyota truck key. It works really well. I am very careful opening the tailgate because it’s well known that they use cheap ass plastic. If all you need is a new lock, ask if the code to your Toyota key lock will fit in your handle. If you get that kind, here is something they don’t tell you. When you stick the key in and turn it the 1st time, it makes a gawdawful crunching breaking sound. That’s perfectly normal. Just keep turning.

I have the PL5410 in black gloss. You can program your OEM key. So far I like it and would recommend it

I went with the programmable one and no issues so far. Bought an aftermarket 12V cam for that blank camera slot and works great.

Good so far. Before I installed it I sprayed the hell out of it with lubricant spray and let it soak over night. Also whenever I clean the truck I spray the key hole as a precaution. No fading at this point either. The PL5410 is non electric, uses your ignition key, has a mount for my backup camera and offers a painted version. I would recommend the PL5410

My 2015 came with the Pop and Lock with the BOLT programmable system. Great to use the ignition key to lock and unlock. I have no strong desire to have a power lock/power unlock unit.

Does the Pop N Lock interfere with the backup cam on a Gen 2?

I recently found out that the Pop & Lock I had installed in summer doesn't lock my tailgate! I recently had it at the dealership for service and asked them to check why it's not locking and unlocking with the fob, and the tech just looked at me and said Tacoma tailgates don't have that function. I could have sworn it did but was like ok, whatever and trusted the guy. He said you could buy an aftermarket kit, so I went on Amazon and bought the pop & lock kit with the Tacoma-specific wiring harness and stuff. I then asked a friend who took some locksmith courses https://www.howtobecomealocksmith.org/, and he told me a different thing. I don't know what to believe and what to do now!

Turns out I wasn't OK with the weathering. Here's a writeup I added to another thread on refinishing my Pop & Lock.
