    Got the PL5300 installed today.

It's not really bad so much as it is just generally not good. I can list a number of things. The fitment isn't quite as perfect as the OEM handle. The lock is a tad touchy and takes a little finesse to get to cooperate (as well as getting the key in and out of said lock). The handle just feels plain flimsy...it flexes when you open the tailgate, and I'm worried about breaking it at some point and having to re-do this whole install shenanigan.

Overall it works fine, and it's a hell of a lot better than a hose clamp or whatever for theft prevention...but I expected more, even though the price wasn't high. It just doesn't give the impression of a quality product.

    9/12/10 Update:

Well, after a few months, we finally arrived at the point where the handle and lock were being very sticky and a pain in the ass to operate. So, I opened the tailgate up again and hit all the working components with Metolius Cam Lube (it was the only lube I had immediately available). That seemed to restore it to a much better working order.

It still feels cheap and flimsy though.

Yea, I felt the same, I put a couple layers of heat shrink over the part inside that makes the tail open and then white lithium grease, works real smooth now.

Shit, that DOES look a lot better. Made in USA and Stainless Steel. When this PnL breaks a Dynolock is replacing it. Thanks for the info. People need to recommend that over the Pop n Locks.

I just removed my Popnlock and replaced it with a Dyno lock. The P n L is crap. Poor design that would lock itself, and the keyhole would freeze-up often in bad weather such that you can't get a key into it to unlock it. On top of that, I found the mechanism was not smooth and required too much effort to open.
Go with the Dynolock. A superior product that lets you use your factory tailgate opener.

That Poop-n-Lock sucks ass. Install on the Dynolock was a breeze.

I have to say that I agree with this on the handles. I installed one on my truck. I would be willing to pay more for a better fit, better plastic and a better lock tumbler.

Oh well, I guess I could add it to the rant thread Janster has running........

Yes, that's the one. Bit of work to find the right wires. Let me know if your going to install one and I'll take a picture of the location where I "T" tapped into the correct wires.

I agree.. I have the pl5300 and hate it. Most of the time when I go to open it it only unlatches the tailgate half way so it's not open just kinda has play and rattle. Then I have to bump it closed and open it a 2nd time...WHACK!!!!!

Guessing this is different than the 5200? Mine has no keyless entry or backup camera & it uses the factory tailgate handle. I don't have the same problems with mine. It locks and unlocks just as it should. Not sure I'd wanna mess with the dynolock on mine. It should be a better unit, it costs twice as much as my 5200, not sure what the 5300 runs. I would def consider it if I did have keyless entry tho.

PL5300 has replaced the PL5200. I had to go 5300 because I am totally addicted to my backup camera. I like the dynolock, but power only pisses me off...want a keyed unit.

5100's all around - fronts at 1.75", 265/70/17 Bridgestone Revo 2, HID headlights and fog lights, factory skid plate, ss exhaust tip, tube steps, Access roll-up tonneau cover, Redline hood struts, 6 D-rings, seat MagLite, LED dome, fumoto oil drain, DTRL, fog light anytime, Kenwood/Clarion speakers, Pop-N-Lock 5300, LED bed lights and a few other things...
I have AUTO-LOCK feature on my 5300 as well! Just slam the tailgate shut and BAM - it's locked again. And yes, the handle needs to be pulled directly out or it won't work.

It's a piece of shit and I'm glad I only paid $40 for it. I'll leave it on because I don't actually need it too often but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

When doing my research, I heard a lot of bad stories with the Dynolock. Glad to hear some actually like theirs.

I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
Somebody did a nice write up on this on here, great pics and all. I was completely sold. Then I kept reading and saw where the same person that took the time to do the write up got pissed off and took it back off. All for the exact same reasons all you guys are mentioning. Has anybody brought it up with the Pop n Lock company? How have they addressed it if so?Self-locking sounds like a defective product to me.
