I read this post and did some web research on it. Many say that using a ceramic stovetop cleaner on the windshield may result in scratching or damage to the auto glass (which apparently is a layered product).
I have some Whink stovetop cleaner and believe me, I was tempted!

    Here's a detailer demo'ing windshield cleaning

I may head to the parts store and buy a specific product.

BonAmi cleanser is safe for auto glass. I use it in the summer to clean splattered dead bugs off the windshield.

I have the suction cup marks too. I would suggest "Barkeepers Friend" and scrub the window, I'll bet it removes them. I used that on my hotrod, it feels like you're sanding the windshield but it does not damage it.

My windshield sucks. It has all kinds of chips, including one that had to be filled. There are also some horizontal scratches at eye level that drive me nuts. It's only been 6 months. The last truck had a cheapo safelight windshield that never got a single chip despite being rocked a few times.

When I had my windshield replaced I found that safelight was one of the more expensive windshield replacement companies.

I paid $115 for the last truck's replacement. $140 for the wife's '06 4runner and they drove the 30 miles to the house both times. I'm told the safelight glass is cheap Chinese crap. Well, they both held up better than the current truck's glass.

I guess the prices went up, or the glass on the Taco is more expensive than I though. Safelight estimate is $388 for the current truck.

I had Safelight glass replacement and it was not any better or worse that the original glass is glass. I have replacement glass in my 2011 don't know who made it it's been through 2 winters it is chipped and sand blasted just like the original it replaced. There is no such a thing as "soft glass". My insurance co. does not care who replaces the glass they try to send you to Safelight probably because they save money. I have no issues with their glass just with the co.

My stock windshield was broken on my '06 a few years ago, Safelite replaced it, 5 days later that one got broken, 2 days after that the broken one got broken again in another spot before it was replaced for the second time...jeshhh. And no, I wasn't in a bad area, just bad luck. I noticed that the A pillar trim on the Safelite windshield was different than OEM, but I never had any trouble with it.

The trim should be exactly as it was before the windshield was replaced.

Major US OEM Suppliers of windshields are:

    Saint-Gobain Sekurit (SGS).
    Carlite.
    Pilkington.
    PPG.
    MOPAR.
    AP Tech.

Aftermarket replacement Windshield major manufacturers are:

    Heshan Zhengda.
    Dongguan Brightpower.
    Shiyan Huachao.

'14 with 3000 or so and the glass is total crap. In Colorado they use a lot of sand, and it is killing the glass. I have a 72 mustang that has lived here its entire life and it shows it. The Taco wont make it 5 years at this rate.

    Insurance wasn't involved.

It's just anecdotal evidence with a small sample size: 1 OEM, 2 Safelight. In my statistically insignificant sampling, safelight kicks the crap out of OEM.

While I've had plenty of chipped or broken windshields, I've never had one that scratches so easy. Chips and breaks involve a lot of variables. Instances of rocks hitting it, force, geometry (both trajectory and slant/curve of the glass), etc. Again, I'm using data from only 3 samples, but relatively similar geometries.

Are all windshields made from the same glass? I don't know enough about the glass industry to make an educated determination. I do know that there are different compositions of glass though. Maybe some are harder, maybe not. I know thermal and electrical properties can vary though, first hand.

It was Southern California when I replaced them.

    Me?

If so here is my thread on proper cleaning, sealing, and scratch removal.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/de...s-stains-scratched-glass-etc.html#post5602651

Please DO NOT USE SOFT SCRUB ON GLASS OR RECOMMEND IT BE USED TO ANYONE ELSE IN THE FUTURE.

AS CLEARLY SHOWN ON THEIR WEBSITE OPTICAL GLASS IS NOT A PROPER SURFACE FOR THIS PRODUCT TO BE USED ON.

    https://www.softscrub.com/surface-guide

DO NOT USE STOVE TOP CLEANER ON YOUR WINDSHIELD.

Your windshield is NOT tempered ceramic glass.

Stove top cleaner is for stoves. Glass cleaner is for glass.

If you don't know the difference see what happens when you slam 400* pots and pans on your windshield over and over again.

    No YOU think it's safe.

Feldspar, limestone, and soda ash are abrasives. Rubbing them into glass will scratch it.

ABRASIVES SHOULD NEVER BE USED ON GLASS.

IMHO the ONLY chemical I would ever use on glass that is being looked through to remove scratches or imperfections is cerium oxide and that is classified as a polish NOT an abrasive.

If you wouldn't use a product on your sunglasses or glasses please don't use or recommend it be used on a windshield.

If your not a pro please ask one before recommending products to other members.
