I am in the market for a portable jump starter. I've been doing some research and have searched also on TW. There seems to be a lot of choices out there but not much specific info. Questions include:

    1. What's a good/reliable brand?

    2. What is a good, or the best, amperage for our trucks?

    3. What are the risks or potential drawbacks of using these things.

Mine is a Stanley brand, like a Fat Max I think. It has a little connected flashlight and also a USB port so you could plug your phone or something into it. It's handy. Charge it like once a month just to make sure it's all sure good to go. I haven't used it with the Tacoma but I used it quite a few times on my old Ford and it was life saver!

the Noco Genius is highly rated. i have one of their larger units, but I've never used it for anything other than recharging devices. it's built super solid and has held the charge fully since i bought it, that's all i can report for now.

I bought this one. Some dude in a parking lot asked if I could give him a jump the next day. Hell yeah, I'll try my new doohickey. Worked like a champ. Took about .5 seconds and drained 3% battery, so it's got some juice for sure. I learned it won't charge a dead battery, it's just for jumping and charging devices.

Picked this up today for $59 at Sears:

    IMG_2590.jpg

It's about the size of an iPhone 5s but about twice as thick.

It's rated as 8000 mAh with 400 peak amps and 200 crank amps. It does have an LED light and can charge cell phones and stuff.

I'll put it through it's paces and report back.

I learned a little bit about these jump starters today. According to my Dad, who is way more knowledgeable about cars and how they work than I am, indicated that no matter "how dead" the battery is, this 400 amp battery will get a car running. Apparently when you jump a car it bypasses the dead battery. I always thought the dead battery was still involved in the process of jumping a car, as in the good battery gives juice to the dead battery. Apparently this view is not correct. The jumper battery provides just enough juice to start the motor, then the alternator charges the dead battery.

I just thought that was interesting. At the time I was concerned that my Die Hard jump starter was only 400 amps but apparently that should be more than enough to jump start an average car, even if the battery is a 550 amp in the car needing a jump.

Wondering what everyone's thoughts on this is?

Would love to hear how you make out. In the market as well. Just hard to believe something that small can start a car..

So far this has been a neat gadget. Since I charged it to 100% on Sunday it has held the charge at 100%.

I've been using the built in LED light every night as well.

This thing will even charge up laptops and cell phones. I'll be testing this later today.

BTW Wal mart has a similar unit for only $39. It's under a different brand name and it's red, but everything else looks the same. I plan on getting one of the Wally World units for my truck. TheDie Hard will go in the wifes car.
