So I have a 2009 tacoma 4x2. Recently I've been hearing/feeling a clunk type sound when going over some bumpy roads. I've eventually kinda narrowed it down to my steering system. I dont notice any negative steering response or anything. My steering wheel does move slightly forward and back if I wiggle it a bit. I've kinda decided it's my intermediate steering shaft but not certain. If I shake it from inside the wheel well. It moves a bit with a rattle. I have a video but not sure if i can atttach it here. Maybe someone can give me some better info. Thanks for any help!

Get someone to move the steering wheel quickly back and forth (+ - half a turn if they can while engine off) while you put your hand around each joint. You might find a loose u joint on the steering shaft, or a ball joint loose, or the slider bushing on the rack needing adjustment.

Also do the zip tie mod.

I haven't had a chance to take the truck apart yet to see if I can narrow it down further. Life happens but I'm hoping to get to it rather soon

Little update. I replaced the steering shaft with pay #45220-04010. Bought an oem replacement for roughly 220. seems to have fixed the clunk sound. Was fairly easy using YouTube videos. Just need an alignment now since my wheel is a tad off. Hope this helps others with a similar issue.

Kind of a late follow up post but worth a shot. I replaced the upper intermediate shaft. Seems the clunking sound still persists. I saw in some YouTube video that when replacing this, they pull the shaft down before tightening the coupler down to remove the slack. I didn't do that and thinking that could cause the clunking sound. Not sure if anyone is familiar with this at all. Hate stressing about this stuff haha
