Hi all. I'm working on a set of wheels for my 3rd gen (20% gloss black powdercoated FJ 8-holes) and trying to sort out center caps. I may just paint the ones that came with the wheels, but I'd prefer a matte black OEM option that fits.

I can't find the thread now, but I read that these can be made to fit the 8-hole rims with slight modification (p/n PTR20-35111-BK):

My question is whether that TRD logo is removable? The back side of the cap shows that it's not a clip-in piece, so I'm wondering if these are just a puffy decal? or actually molded into the plastic?

If anyone knows for certain, or knows of a different matte black center cap I should consider, I'd appreciate the information. Thanks,

How about milling the center out and bonding a black piece back in?

    Emailed BAM, got this back:

This does not help with de-TRDification.

I am pretty sure I can machine these and bond in a black blank cover.
Is there interest if I start making these?

For my application, I'm going to keep looking for direct-fit options or just paint the originals.

As it is, those particular center caps (PTR20-35111-BK) aren't even a proper fit on the FJ 8-holes: instead of clipping into the circular groove of the wheel, you have to lightly file the six "points" of the cap to create a friction fit in that groove, drop the cap into the rim (off the truck) with the points aligned in the lug nut openings, then rotate it so the points engage with and ride in the circular groove. Once the caps are installed and the wheels bolted back up, the lug nuts themselves provide a mechanical stop that prevents the cap from rotating back out. Can't take credit for coming up with this, but from the thread I saw (and cannot seem to find again) it looks pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty darn good.

Anyway, that's a long way of saying I'll look for other solutions before committing to modifications upon modifications just for center caps. Folks who want these de-TRD'd for their matching rim (PTR20-35110-BK) might take you up on it, though. :bananadance:

That's good information, gives the option of at least blacking out the red TRD (maybe gloss on matte or matte on gloss, depending on the caps). Thanks @supmet and @ace96.

Updating my own thread in case anyone else falls down this same rabbit hole. After reading this other thread and messaging with
@Boogyman, I ordered a set of PTR20-35081 caps to try with the FJ 8-hole rims.

At first, I tried a set of black decals from TVD that I thought were correct for the caps, but the decals didn't completely cover the lettering: I was left with black letters thinly outlined in red. Kind of a cool look, but not what I want. Didn't take a picture.

I ended up using hobby paint and a brush to liberally "fill in" the lettering with black paint. This worked well, and I used some micro mesh to "sand" off the inevitable spots where I painted outside the lines. I don't recall the grit, but it was pretty easy to find one that matched the sheen of the caps.

One big caveat here is that the clips on these caps don't actually engage with the groove on the wheel. The picture doesn't show it well, but it's not even close.

However, you can carefully and forcefully flex the "points" of the cap down into the rim and achieve a solid friction fit. First two pictures show the cap just sitting on the rim, third picture shows it "seated" down into the rim.

I'm not super confident that friction fit is enough to keep the caps on the rim, but I'm assuming this is how @Boogyman and others have run theirs, so I'm going to try it and see how it goes. Wheels are at powder right now (ended up going 10% gloss), will update again when I know more.

I used a rubber mallet to tap all the tabs of the center cap into the wheel. My bronze 8 holes are actually for sale now

But the clips or whatever they're called don't actually engage the rim, right? It's a friction fit at each of the six points? Want to confirm that I haven't completely missed something here.

Yup just friction fit. One of mine doesn’t even have the metal clip in it
